How Do You Solve A Problem Like The Sequester?

By MICHAEL FALCONE ( @michaelpfalcone )

NOTABLES

OBAMA PLAYS THE 'SHAME' GAME: This morning, according to the White House, "the President will deliver remarks to urge action to avoid the automatic budget cuts scheduled to hit next Friday if Congress fails to find a path forward on balanced deficit reduction. He will be joined at the White House by emergency responders ? If these cuts go into effect, hundreds of thousands of jobs could be lost and middle class families all across the nation will feel the devastating impact; FEMA would need to eliminate funding for State and local grants that support firefighter positions and State and local emergency management personnel, hampering our ability to respond to natural disasters and other emergencies." ABC's Ann Compton notes that the president delivers his remarks at 10:45 a.m. ET. WATCH Jon Karl's "Good Morning America" report: http://abcn.ws/YwlKkj

THE CHALLENGE TO REPUBLICANS - 'A VERY SIMPLE CHOICE': From the White House statement: "Do they protect investments in education, health care and national defense or do they continue to prioritize and protect tax loopholes that benefit the very few at the expense of middle and working class Americans?"

FROM THE SPEAKER'S DESK: House Speaker John Boehner's spokesman, Brendan Buck, e-mails this statement in response to today's moves by the White House: "We agree the sequester is a bad way to cut spending. That's why we've twice passed a plan to replace it with common sense cuts and reforms that don't threaten our security, safety, and economy. A solution now requires the Senate - controlled by the president's party - to finally pass a plan of their own."

THE ROUNDTABLE

ABC's RICK KLEIN: Senator, we hardly knew ye. Sen. Mike Johanns' surprise retirement adds to a remarkably long list of senators getting out early, particularly this far in advance of traditional retirement season. It's now five announced Senate retirements, in addition to two senators who resigned this year to take other jobs (one public-sector, one private-sector). With the possible exception of Sen. Frank Lautenberg, D-N.J., who would have stood for reelection at age 90 and already faced a possible primary challenge, none of those seven seemed in serious jeopardy of losing their seats next year. That means they're getting out not because they're afraid they'll be thrown out, but because there are other things they want to do. They may be the last to realize it, but being a senator actually isn't looking all that fun - or, at least, not as much fun as it used to be.

ABC's CHRIS GOOD: Alan Simpson and Erskine Bowles are at it again. This morning, they're pushing a re-hashed plan to slow the nation's debt growth and put it on a more stable path, essentially fitting their old plan into a new timeline and pushing leaders in Washington, D.C., to adopt a piecemeal approach to fiscal reform. Taking into account actions that Congress and President Obama have taken in the last two years, Simpson and Bowles say tax and spending reforms don't have to happen all at once. Counting the 2011 budget talks and the recent tax deal as steps one and two, Simpson and Bowles issued a call for two more big steps - which include measures like lowering the growth of Medicare and Medicaid payments to providers, lowering drug costs, enacting Social Security reforms, adopting a "chained CPI" to reduce the growth of Social Security payments and other spending tied to inflation, and reforming the tax code. http://abcn.ws/15rSTD3

ABC's MICHAEL FALCONE: Marco Rubio is checking all the boxes. Fresh off delivering the Republican response to the president's State of the Union address last week (never mind, the dehydration), Rubio finds himself in the Middle East where he is touring several countries, including Israel. Rubio, a member of the Senate Foreign Relations and Intelligence committees, has taken care to highlight America's "truly special" relationship with Israel, as he did in a statement announcing his trip over the weekend: "We must continue to do all we can to support this beacon of democracy, religious freedom and free enterprise in the heart of an unstable region." He'll have an immigration fight on his hands when he returns to U.S. soil, but until then, he's burnishing his foreign affairs credentials in a volatile part of the world - one more step on the path toward 2016.

WHAT WE'RE READING

"DEMOCRATS' MAN FOR BATTLES WILL LEAD NEW SENATE CHARGE," by The New York Times' Jonathan Weisman. "After two grueling election cycles, Guy Cecil, the brains behind the Democrats' improbable Senate showings in 2010 and 2012, was expected to set aside his political combat boots for tasseled loafers and a sinecure somewhere in this city that pays handsomely for success. Then his old boss, Senator Michael Bennet of Colorado, reluctantly took the helm of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, looking at another brutal map for Democrats eager to stay in control of Congress's upper chamber. He had one demand: Keep Guy Cecil aboard. 'It was critically important that Guy stay in the job,' said Mr. Bennet, now reunited with Mr. Cecil, the former chief of staff who spent the last months of his 2010 campaign sleeping in the senator's Colorado basement. 'He is just excellent at what he does.' Mr. Cecil's return as executive director of the committee is notable in a city accustomed to political consultants cashing in for big money 'downtown' - at lobbying firms and with influence peddlers off Capitol Hill." http://nyti.ms/W6OnmN

BUZZ

SEQUESTRATION: WASHINGTON'S WEIRD IDEA. It's the dirtiest word in Washington right now: "sequester." Formerly wrapped up in the "fiscal cliff" that was poised to wreck America's economy at the end of the year, the dreaded "sequester" is the spending half of that taxes-and-spending equation: It amounts to across-the-board budget cuts that will strike in March barring an agreement on deficit reduction. The "sequester" is yet another deadline in a long line of fiscal-policy stalemates that have hounded the U.S. political system in the last two years. Because its origins were esoteric and convoluted, the "sequester" is shrouded in a degree of Washington policy mystique. ABC's Chris Good demystifies the sequester: What is it? Where did it come from? What's the deadline? What will be cut? http://abcn.ws/ZalOHt

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT - TWO VIEWS OF THE SEQUESTER:

-PAUL RYAN: 'NO LEADERSHIP' FROM DEMOCRATS. House Budget Committee Chair Rep. Paul Ryan, R-Wis., blamed the White House and Senate Democrats for failing to avert automatic spending cuts scheduled to take place next month, saying, "there's no leadership on the other side of the aisle and therefore no agreement." "The Senate hasn't passed a bill to replace the sequester. The president gave a speech showing that he'd like to replace it, but he hasn't put any details out there. So that is why I conclude I believe it's going to take place," Ryan said in an interview Sunday morning on "This Week" about the $85 billion in automatic cuts scheduled for March 1. "What we've always said is let's cut spending in smarter ways to replace this sequester," Ryan told ABC News Chief White House correspondent Jonathan Karl. "We [the House] passed two bills doing that and we've heard nothing in response from the Senate Democrats or the president." http://abcn.ws/12WqIN9

-WHITE HOUSE CHIEF OF STAFF: 'THIS SHOULD NOT BE A SOCIAL SCIENCE EXPERIMENT.' Newly-appointed White House Chief of Staff Denis McDonough said finding savings in the federal budget was "not impossible," but continued to stress the need for a "balanced" package that would protect the middle class by avoiding automatic spending cuts that would impact education, mental health services and the "devastating list of horribles" that would impact the Pentagon. "We're going to insist on doing this in a balanced way," McDonough on "This Week." "This should not be a social science experiment. This should be a question where we ask ourselves 'what is most important to the economy, what is most important to the middle class families of this country,' and that's the way the president is going to do this." http://abcn.ws/12WqIN9

MARCO RUBIO STOPS IN JORDAN ON MIDDLE EAST TRIP. Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., is on a tour of the Middle East this week, which will include a stop in Israel, reports ABC's Arlette Saenz. Rubio met Monday with King Abdullah II in Jordan along with other members of the Jordanian government to talk about the Syrian war and the economic and security cooperation between the United States and Jordan. Rubio also met with former Syrian Prime Minister Riad Hijab, who defected to Jordan last year. This marked Rubio's first ever trip to Jordan. The Florida senator, who is accompanied on the trip by his wife Jeanette, will make his second trip to Israel at the end of the week, when he will meet with President Shimon Peres and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The White House announced earlier this month that President Obama will visit Israel this spring. http://abcn.ws/XhhtDf

SOUTH CAROLINA TV AD WARS: MARK SANFORD VS. THE WORLD. Mark Sanford wants you to know that he has learned from his mistakes and will try to change Washington if he gets there. That's the message of his first TV ad, now visible on cable airwaves in Charleston, S.C., where the former governor is attempting the political comeback of the decade, notes ABC's Chris Good. With more ads to come, Sanford has reserved $160,000 worth of TV time before the March 19 primary, according to his campaign. Sanford, who famously resigned the governorship amid an Argentinian affair, faces 15 other candidates in his race to reclaim the state's First Congressional District, which he represented from 1995 to 2001, before assuming the governorship. Just about every kind of local pol has come out to oppose him: current and former state legislators; a sheriff; a personal-injury lawyer; a former JAG officer; a former Secret Service agent; a school-board trustee; and a local high school teacher, to name a few. "Our message is simple: I've learned a lot over the past few years about grace and forgiveness, but one thing hasn't changed. And that's my absolute commitment to watching out for taxpayers and getting spending under control," Sanford wrote in an email to supporters announcing the new ad. http://abcn.ws/12DnOgk

MICHELLE OBAMA'S 'MID-LIFE CRISIS.' First Lady Michelle Obama joked in an interview set to air today that her now-signature bangs weren't a fashion statement but a result of a "mid-life crisis." "This is my mid-life crisis, the bangs," the First Lady, 49, said in a preview clip for Wednesday's "Rachael Ray Show." "I couldn't get a sports car. They won't let me bungee jump. So instead, I cut my bangs." The First Lady made fashion waves when she first sported the bangs in a photo uploaded to her Twitter account on her birthday last month, just before Inauguration weekend, and the president quickly admitted he's a fan of the new hairdo, saying it was the "most significant" event of the weekend. http://abcn.ws/XoxUfM

IN THE NOTE'S INBOX:

-IN THE MONEY: DEMOCRATS TOUT CONGRESSIONAL FUNDRAISING. From an aide to the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee: "Despite being in the minority, DCCC started 2013 (January) by raising nearly $1.7M more than NRCC and begins the cycle ahead of NRCC in cash-on-hand by $1.8M. For the first time since just after Democrats lost the House in 2010, House Democrats now have a cash-on-hand advantage against the NRCC ($4.6M to $2.8M). This is the latest proof that Democrats start 2014 in better shape than the start of 2012. The DCCC now has 30 percent less debt than January 2011. The DCCC also has more cash-on-hand than January of 2011 and raised more this month than any January in history."

Erotic art show allows artists to bare all | MSUM Advocate

Art, poetry and glittered tassels decorated Roberts Street in downtown Fargo this weekend to celebrate the eighth annual erotic art show in conjunction with Dr. Sketchy.

The erotic art show is a three-day show that formed eight years ago for visual artists in the area.

One of the headlining acts for the show included North Dakota?s only burlesque troupe Bad Weather Burlesque. The show included burlesque performances, poetry readings and a special drawing session for both artists and models.

The Dr. Sketchy drawing session held on Saturday gave artists the opportunity to draw local models in erotic-inspired experience. With a fetish-themed inspiration, Bad Weather dancers were dispersed throughout DK Framing for local artists to draw. Along with bragging rights, artists also had the opportunity to win lowbrow art books.

There was also a gallery of submitted art at DK Framing, which will stay up for the rest of the month.

Downstairs in The New Direction, Bad Weather Burlesque and spoken word artists opened the three-day show on Valentine?s Day with a theme centered on reactions to love. Co-founder of The New Direction and MSUM alumnus Jack Stenerson was excited to open the doors to the erotic art show this year.

?We?ve never had anything like this before; it?s completely new and very cool,? Stenerson said. ?It?s also good to see our name out there doing more things besides music, we are open to any events like that and doing stuff like this is good working with other organizations for the underground community.?

One of the performing poets was MSUM professor Kevin Zepper, along with other artists Christine Hoper and Julie Larson. Zepper stirred the crowd after reciting two poems just before graphic design student Ande Sailer took the stage to perform his version of Prince?s hit song ?Kiss.?

?There are so many wonderful creative people in our community,? Horning said. ?With an event like this it combines visual artists, performance artists and literary bugs all for the sake of erotica.?

Alternating between poetry and burlesque was new for the show as well as the troupe. Bad Weather hoped to attract anyone and everyone who was interested in the F-M art community.

Graphic design student Theresa Boyle is a co-worker of Sailer?s and came out to show her support.

?I really enjoyed the show,? Boyle said. ?The poetry mixed with the performances kept my interest throughout the event along with exhibit right up stairs, it was a good theme to go along with Valentine?s Day.?

German court rules in favor of Facebook: no more pseudonyms for account holders

For some time now legal experts in Germany and Facebook?s legal team have argued over the legality of forcing someone to use a real name on the mammoth social media site.? Facebook argued that since their headquarters are in Ireland, German citizen?s rights to privacy, and particularly in regards to making people use real names on Facebook, do not apply.?

Previously a lower German court ruled that Facebook could not legally force German citizens to use their real name.? Thilo Weichert, who serves as the Privacy Commissioner and Head of ULD said in part, ?It is unacceptable that a U.S. portal like Facebook violates German data protection law unopposed and with no prospect of an end.?

Soon thereafter an appeal in another German court said that Facebook did have the right to make the rule since it was basically a voluntary matter where no one person is forced to use Facebook. However, another court ruled in favor of the privacy laws yet again, seemingly keeping the legal battle going?ad nauseam.

The final ruling from the administrative court in the northern German Schleswig stated that Germany?s privacy laws could not apply because Facebook headquartered themselves out of Ireland, which does not recognize those same privacy laws in regards to Internet usage.?

Facebook feels that by making users abide by their real name policy, it helps to protect users from bullying, false identities set out to cause mischief and so forth. ?By allowing someone to use a pseudonym, according to Facebook, only means he or she are only pretending to be someone else for no genuine cause.

Very similar to Facebook, Google?s YouTube has also been slowly making their users post with their real names as associated with their Google + accounts.? According to YouTube the reasoning was to help slow down people that habitually insult (aka, trolls or trolling) or write overly negative reply comments simply for the sport of it. The difference with YouTube is that there are not any obligatory contracts to abide by in regards to using one?s real name.

Working Toward Your Success In Article Syndication | Robin Marks's ...

Many people enjoy writing. Writing is thought by many to be the idea mode of personal expression. The better you become at article writing and marketing, the more likely you will be able to turn it into a business venture. Read on for some tips about how to succeed as an article marketer.

You can make a very big income with article marketing, even if you haven?t paid a single cent. Most successful article promotion businesses use both paid and free services. In most cases, the more time and money you invest into your article advertising, the greater your return.

TIP! Your articles should be filled with valuable and interesting content. This is the key to success.

Keep your articles brief and no more than 500 words, but make them interesting. People have limited focus, so reel them in at the very beginning. Ensure the first couple lines will entice readers to continue reading the article, as that is where the bulk of the information will be.

Use multiple eZinearticles accounts. It is allowed for you to have several accounts with different author names. You only need to make sure that all of your accounts are consistently submitting high quality content. Create multiple articles under these pen names, but maintain the same keywords.

TIP! Before accepting content share agreements, research what rights you retain and the intentions of the other party. A site that takes the rights to your articles may not give you credit for them, which defeats the purpose of article marketing.

Your intro is your best chance to keep visitors on your site, so make sure it?s something attractive. Every single thing you publish online should have a quality introduction. Use whatever means you can to attract the attention of readers and keep them there reading. The opening is what will draw in your readers. A good opening means a reader who sticks around and clicks into your website, while a poor opening means a visitor who just leaves.

Don?t forget to pay attention to your headline instead of focusing all of your attention on the body of your article. The first thing seen by your readers is the headline, so it must catch their attention so they feel compelled to read the whole article. Try using catchy phrases or words that offer people what they?re looking for.

TIP! To make the articles you write fun for your readers, pretend like you are chatting with a friend while you write the articles. When you sound like you?re speaking to a buddy it gives off more of a friendly tone as opposed to a lot of the stilted and blandness of many articles you see online.

Social Media

Coordinate your social media marketing efforts with other article marketers. By getting your articles ?likes?, re-posted and blogged about, you can boost the number of viewers in your audience. There are a number of services available to you that can implement your content with social media sites.

TIP! Save all copies of posts, emails, etc. that you make when searching for information.

Proofreading is an important, but often neglected step in the writing process. You want articles which read like a true expert wrote them. Double-check your work for spelling and grammar errors, and don?t forget to check your facts. If you provide false or outdated information, you will start to lose credibility.

The content you provide on your website should help your reader resolve a concern. If you help someone, they may read more of your articles.

TIP! Each article should include about 400 to 600 words. Articles that are too long may cause readers to lose interest.

The titles you put on your articles should include highly-visible keywords. The keywords helped target visitors to your site.

Don?t try to sell yourself too much through your articles. You will have an easier time selling yourself if you give your readers quality information. Readers will not like reading something that reads like a sales pitch.

TIP! Never pen an article without first analyzing your audience. When you use article marketing, you have to cater to individual demographics and provide them with content that is valuable to them.

Article Writing

You might want to outsource article writing. If you don?t have time for article writing, you can hire a freelance writer. The expense will likely balance out when you have the high quality content that you need to post regularly.

TIP! One way to maximize the effectiveness of your article marketing is to trade links on social media sites. Those articles that receive thumbs ups, ?liked?, mentioned in blogs, repeated on other sites and shared on social media pages will gain a greater following.

Always read the rules on each article directory you wish to submit your articles to before you send them in. You should make sure you stay on good terms with the article directories by following the rules.

If you have a site that allows people to post things to your page like comments, the ?no follow? link attribute should be used. Spam links are all too common, so you can do your part to point them out to web crawlers. Doing so will allow you to ensure that your site?s reputation is not compromised by spam sites.

TIP! There are no real secrets when it comes to article marketing. If you heard there are then, these are all lies.

Always remember to create quality articles. Don?t worry about how many articles you are putting out until you have article quality under control. Your customers want to read articles full of valuable information. They won?t want boring, vague articles. Quality is the most important aspect to focus on when you are molding your articles.

One of the best ways to boost business on the Internet is by article advertising. In addition to that, it is one marketing method that is very easy to fail at. People who ignore the advice here will ultimately end up having problems. Take some time to keep yourself safe, and use the tools we have provided as a starting point.

TIP! One account is great to have, but if possible, try to setup more than one on eZinearticles. You can use multiple accounts if you are always uploading good content.

'Stench cruise' fallout: Will it create a stink for Carnival and the industry?

Carnival will take a hit from the 'stench cruise' ordeal, and the industry will scurry to reassure potential customers. But the impact on the growing sector should be short-lived, experts say.

By Mark Trumbull,?Staff writer / February 15, 2013

The 'stench cruise' ship Carnival Triumph is moored at a dock in Mobile, Ala., Friday.

Five days adrift in the Gulf of Mexico without flushable toilets did little to please some 4,200 people aboard the Carnival Triumph.

It?s also a blow to the cruise industry and especially to a major player in it, Carnival, even though the passengers are now back on land.

At least in the short run, the event that might go down as the ?stench cruise? hits the company?s earnings. It also puts pressure on the whole industry to mount publicity campaigns to reassure potential customers that maritime vacations are fun and safe.

But as harrowing as the experience was for passengers, and as publicized as it was by the news media, it?s not yet clear whether the incident will change the longer term course of an industry that?s been steadily growing its business volume for years.

?It?s a short-term blip,? predicts Ross Klein, a sociologist who tracks the industry and works at Memorial University of Newfoundland in St. Johns. But ?it'll impact the whole industry,? he says, and ?certainly Carnival more so than the others.?

Judging by one online survey this week, some people look at this news and say, "I'll never do that." But that's a setback, not necessarily a reversal for an industry that has been roughly doubling its business each decade, Mr. Klein says.

He notes that the industry was little fazed, in the end, after the highly publicized Costa Concordia disaster a year ago, in which a similarly sized cruise ship ran aground off the coast of Italy, leaving more than 30 people dead. The operator of that ship, Costa Cruises, is owned by Carnival.

Although the latest cruise ship trouble lacks some of the Concordia?s drama ? no fatalities, no destruction of a costly ship, no focus on allegations of gross negligence by the captain ? it has its own potential for affecting the consuming public.

The Triumph?s loss of power (caused by an engine fire that was successfully put out on Feb. 10) occurred close to home for the American public and news media. And the reports from passengers during and after the ordeal brought home vividly what the loss of everyday amenities like plumbing and air conditioning might mean when several thousand people are wedged into relatively small quarters.

On Friday, the morning after the Triumph was towed into the port of Mobile, Ala., more details were emerging as passengers commented on their experience.
