Chinese President Hu Jintao, Prime Minister Wen Jiabao and other leaders have watched the Peking Opera at a gala here to celebrate the New Year.

The 200-year-old Peking Opera, which combines instrumental music, vocal performances, mime, dance and acrobatics, is regarded as a cultural treasure of China.

Top legislator Wu Bangguo and political advisor Jia Qinglin were among nearly 1,000 visitors who attended the program at the National Centre for the Performing Arts Thursday, reports Xinhua.

The show included excerpts from the classical Peking Opera 'The Fourth Son Visits His Mother' and other traditional works.

The Unesco has listed Peking Opera as an intangible cultural heritage.

FLORIDA: A salute to our military and veteran heroes with featured speaker Allen West

?THE UNITED WEST ? Location:??400 S. Monroe St. Apalachee Pkwy?Tallahassee, FL?from 10:30-4:00 at the Historic Capitol Building?(House Chamber)?2nd floor, room 206.

We owe our men and women who have served and are currently serving in the United States Military a debt of gratitude. Please join with us January 10th in support of our troops both active duty and retired, their families and orphaned children.

The overriding objective of this exciting program is to support the troops and educate Floridians on National Security issues. Our goal is to honor the bravery, sacrifices and work of our men and women in uniform who take extraordinary risks to protect our freedoms here at home.

In stark contrast to our program of supporting the troops, other organizations, including Occupy Wall Street activists from across Florida, will be convening on the State Capitol on January 10th to petition their elected representatives and?selfishly?demand that Florida provide their needs.

With your support and man power we can show the national news that the pro-American message of support our troops, Constitution, and Bill of Rights is far superior to that of the Occupy Movements message of Socialism, anti-Capitalism, and redistribution of wealth. The United West coalition will peacefully confront a planned demonstration by the Occupy Wall Street movement on the steps of the Florida Capitol on January 10, 2012. www.peoplesconventionofflorida.org?

Col. Allen West featured speaker

All citizens have the right to seek redress from our legislature.?However, our coalition of patriots is joining together to honor those who have?selflesslysuffered and sacrificed to?ensure?that these very freedoms and liberties?will continue to be enjoyed by all Floridians.

With your proactive participation we can show the world that our pro-American message of supporting our troops, the Constitution and the Bill of Rights is first and foremost the duty and responsibility ?of not just our military but of all Americans. ?SPEAKER LIST HERE

The overriding objective of this exciting program, which undoubtedly will get national media coverage, is to Support the troops and educate Floridians on National Security issues. Our goal is to develop informed voters who elect politicians on November 6, who support Constitutional Conservatism thus defeating those who prefer Socialism & Marxism to Liberty & Freedom!

If you are a conservative leader dedicated to making a difference at this historical moment in our nation then we want you to join with us as we take a strong stand against tyranny, and show America what Florida activism is all about!

Yangon blast kills 17, injures 80: Myanmar police (Reuters)

YANGON (Reuters) ? At least 17 people died and 80 were injured in an early morning explosion at an industrial district on Thursday in an eastern suburb of Myanmar's biggest city, Yangon, police said.

Earlier, witnesses had spoken of about 50 dead bodies after the 2 a.m. (1930 GMT Wednesday) blast in an industrial district of the country's commercial hub.

But a police officer said 12 men and five women had been confirmed dead as of 6 a.m. He said further deaths were expected.

Some witnesses said a fire had broken out at a chemical storage warehouse, causing an explosion that triggered several smaller blasts. Police said three firemen were among the dead.

Fire engines from all parts of Yangon were at the scene, witnesses said. Fire was reported to have spread to a nearby shipyard and factories.

Television pictures showed rescue teams carrying casualties on stretchers in the middle of the night around what appeared to be badly damaged buildings.

The shock from the loud explosion in the area was felt by many people in eastern and central Yangon.

Police would not comment on the cause of the disaster.

"There are many casualties. We are not in a position to give you further information. We are still looking into it," a second police officer from Mingalar Taungnyunt Township Police Station told Reuters.

Last Wednesday, December 21, a woman was killed and another injured when what was described as a bomb exploded in a public toilet near the main campus of Yangon University.

Bomb blasts are common in Myanmar, which has been torn by ethnic rebellions and armed struggle against successive governments since independence in 1948.

Thailand, Cambodia aim for offshore oil development

PHNOM PENH | Thu Dec 29, 2011 3:19am EST

PHNOM PENH Dec 29 (Reuters) - Offshore oil and gas reserves in disputed waters of the Gulf of Thailand could take up to a decade to tap, despite progress between Thailand and Cambodia towards restarting talks on joint development, Thailand's energy minister said on Thursday.

The two countries are keen to reach an agreement on joint exploration and development of the Overlapping Claim Area (OCA) in the Gulf, which has been delayed by political upheaval in Thailand and sometimes deadly border disputes.

Thai Energy Minister Pichai Naripthaphan said Thailand would seek parliamentary approval to restore a decade-old Memorandum of Understanding between the two countries that was scrapped by the previous government when relations deteriorated.

Negotiations on joint development and revenue-sharing would soon follow, he added.

"There are processes that need to be done on both sides but the intention was very good, the relationship was very good and we're certain in the future there'll be no more conflict," Pichai told reporters after a meeting with Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister Sok An, also head of the National Petroleum Authority.

"We want to see this proceed with success because it's for energy security for both countries ... for another 40 or 50 years," he said.

But he accepted it would be some time before oil and gas could be produced in the OCA, which covers 27,000 sq km (16,000 sq miles). "There are a lot of processes and it could be eight to 10 years before a single drop of oil and gas comes."

The two countries had come close to an agreement but that was derailed when former Thai premier Thaksin Shinawatra was overthrown by the military in 2006. However, since his sister, Yingluck Shinawatra, became prime minister in August, diplomatic ties have warmed significantly.

Chevron Corp and Total have exploration rights to Block A in the disputed stretch of the Gulf, which Thailand and Cambodia have both claimed sovereignty over since the early 1970s.

Three Japanese firms -- Inpex, Marubeni Oil and Gas, a subsidiary of Marubeni Corp, and Mitsui Oil Exploration Co, a unit of trading house Mitsui & Co Ltd -- have expressed interest in the reserves.

Pichai said energy officials from the two countries had discussed plans to work together in areas like gas separation, power generation and chemical production, and Cambodian engineers would be invited to train in Thailand.

Cambodian government spokesman Phay Siphan said the two countries also discussed plans to build a power plant in Koh Kong province bordering Thailand, which would purchase most of the electricity.

Congress frees $40 million in aid to Palestinians (AP)

WASHINGTON ? Lawmakers have freed up a little more than 20 percent of $187 million in U.S. assistance to the Palestinians that had been frozen over the Palestinian bid for U.N. membership.

Members of Congress have made available $40 million in economic and humanitarian funding for the Palestinians, the State Department said Wednesday. The money is administered by the U.S. Agency for International Development and "has been vital to establishing and strengthening the foundations necessary for a future Palestinian state," the department said.

The Obama administration had been urging lawmakers, with Israel's backing, to release the money as it contributes to Palestinian stability and Israeli security. "It is in the interest of the Palestinians, Israel and the United States, to ensure these efforts continue," State Department spokesman Mark Toner said. "They help to build a more democratic, stable, and secure region."

The administration is pressing Congress to release the remaining $147 million that comes from the last budget cycle in which aid to the Palestinians was to total 545.7 million. New funding for the Palestinians will be subject to additional scrutiny and can be blocked if they win full admission to the United Nations before a peace deal with Israel is agreed.

The administration has asked Congress for $513.4 million in aid for the Palestinians in fiscal year 2012.

Jimmer Fredette Report Card After Two NBA Games

After an exceptional college career, Jimmer Fredette is finally in the NBA.

The heralded combo guard made his NBA debut with the Kings as Sacramento defeated the Lakers, 100-91, at Power Balance Pavilion on Monday night, and then followed it up with a strong showing in a Kings' loss to the Portland Trail Blazers,101-79, at Rose Garden on Tuesday.?

Fredette's first possession was one to forget as he turned the ball over with a double-dribble. However, he followed that up with 15-foot fadeaway. The former Brigham Young star would go on to convert his next two shots, as well.

"My first one at BYU, I airballed it," said a smiling Fredette, when asked to describe his first NBA scoring attempt.

Though he started out with some hot shooting, Fredette would later miss his next five shots to finish with six points on three-of-eight shooting against the Lakers. He contributed three assists, but also three turnovers.

Head coach Paul Westphal gave Fredette 26 minutes in his debut, many of which were played alongside starting point guard and 2010 Rookie of the Year Tyreke Evans. Fredette may have played more minutes if not for the excellent performance from shooting guard Marcus Thornton who scored 27 points on nine-of-13 shooting.

Like us on Facebook

In the second game of his career, Fredette shot four-of-10 from the field, and finished with 10 points in 23 minutes. He also added two assists, and made his first ever three-point shot.

Fredette sat out most of the fourth quarter, as the Kings tried to battle back from a big deficit with their starters.

Westphal has shown confidence in Fredette for playing him as much as he has so far, which means that a larger role may be heading Fredette's way down the road. The Kings are not projected to make the postseason, so Westphal will likely tinker with his rotation throughout the season.

Because of the shortened season, rookies have it particularly difficult in 2011-2012. New players have to learn, and learn quick. The transition from college is often frustrating for rookies, though Fredette may have less growing pains than others due to his extensive career at BYU.

It's still early in the season, and the 22-year-old still has plenty of opportunities to improve. Fredette already made former Sports Illustrated columnist Rick Reilly eat his words that he would be an NBA bust -- and that was just after two preseason games.

Though it's difficult to offer a grade for Fredette after only two games, he has shown the poise and maturity many expected from him in the early going. He has made some mistakes, but he has also made the most of his minutes off the bench, and looks like he will be a key part of the Kings this season.

(AP) ? Tens of thousands of defiant Syrian protesters thronged the streets of Homs Tuesday, calling for the execution of President Bashar Assad shortly after his army pulled its tanks back and allowed Arab League monitors in for the first time to the city at the heart of the anti-government uprising.

The pullback was the first sign the regime was complying with the League's plan to end the 9-month-old crackdown on mostly unarmed and peaceful protesters.

Yet amateur video released by activists showed forces firing on protesters even while the monitors were inside the city. One of the observers walked with an elderly man who pointed with his cane to a fresh pool of blood on the street that he said had been shed by his son, killed a day earlier.

The man, wearing a red-and-white checkered headdress, then called for the monitor to walk ahead to "see the blood of my second son" also killed in the onslaught.

"Where is justice? Where are the Arabs?" the old man shouted in pain.

Syrian tanks had been heavily shelling Homs for days, residents and activists said, killing dozens even after Assad signed on early last week to the Arab League plan, which demands the government remove its security forces and heavy weapons from city streets, start talks with opposition leaders and allow human rights workers and journalists into the country.

But a few hours before the arrival of the monitors, who began work Tuesday to ensure Syria complies with the League's plan, the army stopped the bombardment and pulled some of its tanks back.

The British-based activist group Syrian Observatory for Human Rights confirmed that government forces fired on protesters while the monitors were inside Homs and said at two people were killed from the fire.

About 60 monitors arrived in Syria Monday night ? the first foreign observers Syria has allowed in since March, when the uprising against Assad's authoritarian rule began. The League said a team of 12 visited Homs.

After agreeing to the League's pullback plan on Dec. 19, the regime intensified its crackdown on dissent; government troops killed hundreds in the past week and Syria was condemned internationally for flouting the spirit of the agreement.

On Monday alone, security forces killed at least 42 people, most of them in Homs. Activists said security forces killed at least 16 people Tuesday, including six in Homs.

One group put Tuesday's toll at 30, including 13 in Homs province. Different groups often give varying tolls. With foreign journalists and human rights groups barred from the country, they are virtually impossible to verify.

Amateur videos show residents of Homs pleading with the visiting monitors for protection.

"We are unarmed people who are dying," one resident shouts to one observer. Seconds later, shooting is heard from a distance as someone else screams: "We are being slaughtered here."

Given the intensified crackdown over the past week, the opposition has viewed Syria's agreement to the Arab League plan as a farce. Some even accuse the organization of 22 states of complicity in the killings. Activists say the regime is trying to buy time and forestall more international condemnation and sanctions.

"The Syrian government will cooperate symbolically enough in order not to completely alienate the Arab League," said Bilal Saab, a Middle East expert at the Monterey Institute of International Studies in California. "But make no mistake about it, its survival strategy is to keep kicking the can down the road, until domestic and international circumstances change in its favor."

Opponents of Assad doubt the Arab League can budge the autocratic leader at the head of one of the Middle East's most repressive regimes. Syria's top opposition leader, Burhan Ghalioun, called Sunday for the League to bring the U.N. Security Council into the effort. The U.N. says more than 5,000 people have been killed since March in the political violence.

Shortly after the tanks pulled back and stopped shelling, the videos showed tens of thousands flooding into the streets and marching defiantly in a funeral. They carried the open casket overhead with the exposed face of an 80-year-old man with a white beard.

"Listen Bashar: If you fire bullets, grenades or shells at us, we will not be scared," one person shouted to the crowd through loudspeakers. Many were waving Syria's independence flag, which predates the 1963 ascendancy of Assad's Baath party to power.

"The people want to execute Bashar," chanted a group as they walked side-by-side with monitors through one of Homs' streets. "Long live the Free Syrian Army," they chanted, referring to the force of army defectors fighting Assad's troops.

The amateur video also showed a man picking up the remains of a mortar round and showing it to the observers.

In another exchange, a resident tells a monitor: "You should say what you just told the head of the mission. You said you cannot cross to the other side of the street because of sniper fire."

The monitor points to the head of the team and says: "He will make a statement." The resident then repeats his demand, and the monitor, smoking a cigarette, nods in approval.

The Observatory for Human Rights said as the monitors visited Homs, tens of thousands of protesters gathered in some neighborhoods to "reveal the crimes committed by the regime."

Later, the Observatory said some 70,000 protesters tried to enter the tightly secured Clock Square but were pushed back by security forces that fired tear gas and later live bullets, killing at least two, to prevent them from reaching the city's largest square. The Local Coordination Committees, another activist group, said security forces were shooting at protesters trying to reach the central square.

Homs, Syria's third-largest city, has a population of 800,000 and is at the epicenter of the revolt against Assad. It is about 100 miles (160 kilometers) north of the capital, Damascus. Many Syrians refer to it as the "Capital of the Revolution."

Opposition activist Mohammed Saleh said four days of heavy bombardment in Homs stopped in the morning on Tuesday and tanks were seen pulling out. Another Homs activist said he saw armored vehicles leaving early on a highway leading to the eastern city of Palmyra. He asked that his name not be made public for fear of retribution.

"Today is calm, unlike previous days," Saleh said. "The shelling went on for days, but yesterday was terrible."

The Observatory said some army vehicles pulled out of Homs while other relocated in government compounds "where (they) can deploy again within five minutes."

A local official in Homs told The Associated Press the team of monitors, headed by Sudanese Lt. Gen. Mohamed Ahmed Mustafa al-Dabi, met with Ghassan Abdul-Aal, the governor of Homs province. After the meeting, the monitors headed to several tense districts including Baba Amr and Inshaat, sites of the most intense crackdowns since Friday.

The official later said that most members of the Arab team headed back to Damascus, while three will spend the night in Homs. The official refused to give details about where the observers will stay for security reasons.

In addition to the deaths reported by activist groups Tuesday, Syrian state-run news agency SANA said two roadside bombs targeted a bus carrying employees of a state company in Idlib, killing six and wounding four.

Also Tuesday, a Lebanese-based al-Qaida-linked group, Abdullah Azzam Brigades, claimed that two suicide attacks against Damascus security offices that killed at least 66 Friday were the work of the Syrian regime, and not al-Qaida as Syrian authorities said.

And in Lebanon, security officials said Syrian troops opened fire at a car that crossed illegally into northern Lebanon, killing three Lebanese men. Some Syrians have fled to Lebanon to escape the fighting, and Syria has complained that weapons are smuggled across its borders. It was not immediately clear if the shooting was related to the uprising in Syria.

Split Decision in Microsoft Smartphone Patent Case

A U.S trade authority on Dec. 20 backed a claim by Microsoft that Motorola Mobility had infringed on its patented technology in Android-powered smartphones. An initial ruling by International Trade Commission (ITC) administrative law judge Theodore Essex indicated he agreed that Motorola Mobility had tapped into Microsoft technology for scheduling meetings using a smartphone. Motorola Mobility referred to the decision, which is to be reviewed by the entire commission, a victory since it did not endorse six other patent violation claims by the Redmond, Washington-based software colossus. "We are very pleased that the majority of the rulings were favorable to Motorola Mobility," said the company's general counsel Scott Offer. Meanwhile, Motorola has ongoing patent infringement suits against Microsoft in several jurisdictions, including the ITC. Android has been growing in size as a target, with more than half of the smartphones sold around the world in the third quarter of this year powered by the Google software, according to industry tracker Gartner. Motorola Mobility's trove of patents was a key reason that Google bought the company this year for $12.5 billion in cash. "Our acquisition of Motorola will increase competition by strengthening Google's patent portfolio, which will enable us to better protect Android from anti-competitive threats from Microsoft, Apple and other companies," Google chief executive Larry Page said when the Motorola Mobility buy was announced. Motorola Mobility chief executive Sanjay Jha told financial analysts the U.S .maker of smartphones and touchscreen tablet computers has over 17,000 issued patents and another 7,500 pending.

Troops deploy to Afghanistan on Christmas

ATLANTA -- Christmas is a festive day at the USO at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport, but it's also a day with big dose of reality.

As the last troops are returning from Iraq, the troops at the USO on Christmas day are deploying for the active war zones of Afghanistan.

For them, the war is far from over, but they worry that the American public has put this war on the back burner.

"I think a lot of people have forgotten about Afghanistan," said Elizabeth Chen, U.S. Army, as?she returned from Iraq and Kuwait. "As soon as Iraq came up, all you heard [was] Iraq, Iraq, and Iraq."

"We still have people out there," she added. "It's sad. I wish people would pay just a little bit more attention. The fact that we have our brothers and sisters, wives and daughters, and so many others over there. It's kind of sad that we forget about that sometimes."

But the troops?on their way back to an active war show little emotion.

"Those feelings I just leave them alone," said Ron Pierre, U.S. Army.?"I have no choice but to go back. In order for me to provide for my family I have to do that."?

"It's my job," added Michael Sheehan, U.S. Army. "It's what I signed up to do. My family is very understanding and supportive. It's OK. It's a little intense at times, but I'm okay with it."

"You've got to do your job day by day," Seth Lapham, U.S. Army, said as he checked in at the USO for his flight to Afghanistan. "You don't really think too much of the harm. You just got to keep your head up and just keep alert and stay focused." "

To brighten the day, and take their minds off what was ahead, the USO went all out to make the deploying troops feel right at home.

A lavish buffet was prepared by Atlanta's leading volunteer chefs and served by a contingent of community volunteers.

And bringing big smiles were?Santa and his helpers. Santa was Jackson Bedford, a Fulton County Judge and former Navy pilot who served in Vietnam.

As Christmas day started winding down, the troops marched across the airport atrium to loud applause and cheers as they headed to their waiting aircraft for a return to an active war.

Hollywood Christian wins South Florida Holiday Classic; Latest Girls Basketball results (Dec. 23)

Ariah Osceola led the charge with her game-high 24 points and helped Hollywood Christian to a 65-50 win over Dwyer in the championship game of the South Florida Holiday Classic at the MLK Community Center in Hollywood on Friday night.

Osceola also had four steals and four 3-pointer for the Eagles (11-3) who handed Dwyer its first loss of the season.

?It was just our girls being disciplined, going over the gameplan we set for them and executing it,? Eagles coach Carlos Adamson said of his team?s decisive win. ?Our goal was to keep the ball out of the hands of their bigs and once we did that we used our press defense to cause some turnovers and we scored a lot in transition.?

Rickae Jinks had nine points and a team-high 11 rebounds for Hollywood Christian, while Sarah Kelton added 15 points and seven assists and Shamauria Bridges chiped in 10 points and four steals.

The Eagles kept Dwyer?s Sun Sentinel Fab Five center Kai James in check, limiting the 6-foot-5 junior to just four points.

Keyanna Harris led the Panthers (13-1) with 15 points and Kiandra Bowers scored 13.

Rose lifts Bulls over Lakers in NBA opener

LOS ANGELES ? Derrick Rose scored the go-ahead basket with 4.8 seconds remaining as the Chicago Bulls opened their new NBA season with an 88-87 win over the Los Angeles Lakers on Sunday.

While Rose provided the finishing scoring touch, teammate Luol Deng gave the Bulls the fourth-quarter spark they needed to come from behind in front of a Christmas Day crowd of 18,997 at Staples Center arena.

?We showed fight,? said Rose. ?We don?t want to be in a situation like that but we got it done.?

Deng scored nine points in the final quarter and intercepted a Kobe Bryant pass then quickly got the ball to Rose who drove to the basket before pulling up and draining a short one-handed lob.

Bryant had a chance to put the Lakers back in front but his jumper from in close was blocked by Deng at the buzzer.

?I wanted to crowd him so he didn?t have a jump shot,? Deng said of Bryant.

Rose finished with 22 points and five assists and Deng had 21 points for the Bulls who moved to 7-7 in their last 14 season openers.

?That is just something I am used to doing if I am going to my right hand. They let me get to my right hand and that?s how it got up,? Rose same of the game-winning shot.

Bryant, who is playing with a bandaged wrist to protect a torn tendon, scored a game high 28 points and Pau Gasol had 14 points for the Lakers who have a 36-16 record in season openers in franchise history.

This was the first time since the start of the 2008-09 season that the Lakers haven?t begun their home schedule with a championship ring ceremony at centre court.

Instead Lakers guard and president of the players union, Derek Fisher, took the microphone before the game to talk about the new collective bargaining agreement.

?Everybody wasn?t happy with the process or the finished product but thanks for your support and patience,? Fisher told the crowd.

After almost having to cancel the season, the league and players union agreed on a last-minute labour deal which resulted in a compressed 66-game schedule, beginning with five games on Christmas Day.

Because of the lockout teams have had a little more than two weeks and just two exhibition games to get ready for the season.

Dallas caught fire last year and beat the Miami Heat for the NBA title but the Heat earned a measure of revenge Sunday by holding on to beat the Mavericks 105-94.

In another opening-day game, the New York Knicks edged the Boston Celtics 106-104.

In later games, Oklahoma City hosts Orlando and the Los Angeles Clippers visit Golden State.

The Lakers are one of the NBA?s most storied franchises but they enter the season with plenty of uncertainty. The biggest concern being the absence of legendary coach Phil Jackson who retired with 11 championship rings.

Fragile centre Andrew Bynum is suspended for the first four games of the season, Bryant is playing with a torn tendon in his right wrist which he has decided not to have surgery on and Lamar Odom is gone to rival Dallas after demanding a trade during the pre-season.

?We are going through some growing pains and we are going to have to learn from them,? Lakers coach Mike Brown said. ?This one hurts, whether we lost by one point or 10 points.?

The Bulls have now taken the last two meetings in the series after dropping seven straight to the Lakers.

Chicago are one of the pre-season favourites to win the championship this year after making it all the way to the league semi-finals last year before losing to Miami in five games.

Reigning league MVP Rose, 23, recently signed a five-year, multi-million dollar contract extension.
