CAIRO (AP) ? Egypt's chief prosecutor ordered an investigation on Thursday into allegations that opposition leaders committed treason by inciting supporters to overthrow Islamist President Mohammed Morsi.

The probe by a Morsi-appointed prosecutor was launched a day after the president called for a dialogue with the opposition to heal rifts opened in the bitter fight over an Islamist-drafted constitution just approved in a referendum. The opposition decried the investigation as a throwback to Hosni Mubarak's regime, when the law was used to smear and silence opponents.

The probe was almost certain to sour the already tense political atmosphere in the country.

The allegations were made initially in a complaint by at least two lawyers sent to the chief prosecutor earlier this month. They targeted opposition leaders Mohammed ElBaradei, a Nobel Peace laureate and former head of the U.N. nuclear agency, former Foreign Minister Amr Moussa, and Hamdeen Sabahi. Both Moussa and Sabahi were presidential candidates who competed against Morsi in the last election.

There was no immediate comment by any of the three opposition leaders named but the opposition dismissed the allegations.

Emad Abu Ghazi, secretary-general of the opposition party ElBaradei heads, said the investigation was "an indication of a tendency toward a police state and the attempt to eliminate political opponents." He said the ousted Mubarak regime dealt with the opposition in the same way.

Mubarak jailed his opponents, including liberals and Islamists. International rights groups said their trials did not meet basic standards of fairness.

ElBaradei was a leading figure behind the uprising against Mubarak and at one point, he was allied with the Brotherhood against the old regime.

The investigation does not necessarily mean charges will be filed against the leaders. But it is unusual for state prosecutors to investigate such broad charges against high-profile figures.

Morsi, Egypt's first democratically elected president, asked the opposition on Wednesday to join a national dialogue to heal rifts and move on after a month of huge street protests against him and the constitution drafted by his allies.

Some of the protests erupted into deadly violence. On Dec. 5, anti-Morsi demonstrators staging a sit-in outside the presidential palace in Cairo were attacked by Morsi supporters. Fierce clashes ensued that left 10 people dead.

The wave of protests began after Morsi's Nov. 22 decrees that gave him and the assembly writing the constitution immunity from judicial oversight. That allowed his Islamist allies on the assembly to hurriedly rush through the charter before an expected court ruling dissolving the panel.

After the decrees, the opposition accused Morsi of amassing too much power in his hands. They said the constitution was drafted without the participation of liberal, minority Christian and women members of the assembly, who walked out in protest at the last minute.

Even though the constitution passed in a referendum, the opposition has vowed to keep fighting it. They say it enshrines Islamic law in Egypt, undermines rights of minorities and women, and restricts freedoms.

Morsi and Brotherhood officials accused the opposition of working to undermine the president's legitimacy, and accused former regime officials of working to topple him.

Although he reached out to the opposition for reconciliation, Morsi did not offer any concessions in his speech Wednesday calling for a dialogue.

On Wednesday Morsi asked his prime minister to carry out a limited reshuffle of his government, without offering the opposition any seats.

In an apparent protest against the decision to keep the same prime minister, the minister of parliamentary affairs resigned. A member of his Islamist party said Prime Minister Hesham Kandil has not lived up to the challenges of the previous period, and a stronger, more political prime minister should be nominated.

This is the second resignation of a Cabinet minister this week and follows a spate of resignations of senior aides and advisers during the constitutional crisis.

Details of the complaint filed by the two lawyers were carried on the website of Morsi's Muslim Brotherhood, the Islamic fundamentalist group that has become Egypt's most powerful political faction since the 2011 uprising.

The report said their complaint alleged that the opposition leaders were "duping simple Egyptians to rise against legitimacy and were inciting against the president," which constitutes treason.

Yara Khalaf, a spokeswoman for Moussa, said there were no official charges and he had not been summoned for investigation. But she declined to comment on the accusations.

Heba Yassin, a spokesman for the Popular Current headed by Sabahi, said Sabahi faced similar charges under Mubarak and his predecessor. She dismissed them as fabrications and an attempt to smear his reputation and silence the opposition.

"Morsi is confirming that he is following the same policies of Mubarak in repressing his opponents and trying to smear their reputation through false accusations," Yassin said.

"Also this is evidence of what we had warned about ? the judiciary and the prosecutor-general must be independent and not appointed by the president," she said. "He is a Morsi appointee and this is where his loyalty lies and he is now implementing orders to eliminate the opposition."

The chief prosecutor, Talaat Abdullah, was appointed by Morsi at the height of the political tension over the constitution. He could not be immediately reached for comment.

Morsi's Nov. 22 presidential decrees appointed Abdullah to replace the chief prosecutor who was a holdover from the Mubarak regime. The judiciary protested the move, seeing it as trampling of its authority to choose the chief prosecutor.

The Supreme Judicial Council, the country's highest judicial authority, asked Abdullah to step down Wednesday because he was appointed by the president.

Human Rights lawyer Bahy Eddin Hassan said the fact that the chief prosecutor has asked for an investigation meant he is taking the accusations by the lawyers seriously.

Abdullah asked a judge to conduct the investigation, the state news agency reported.

Hassan said this was an attempt to show that the investigation is independent. However the judiciary, like the rest of the country, is divided between supporters and opponents of Morsi and the Brotherhood.

"This is the beginning of a series of events where the judiciary will be used to settle political scores with opponents," Hassan said. "This is not a new policy. But it is new that a regime that is just starting out uses such tools."

With an economic crisis and unpopular austerity measures looming in Egypt, Hassan said: "The regime wants to keep the opposition busy with its legal battles."

We?re seeing an increasingly diverse range of female pop voices (Grimes, Kimbra, Charli XCX, etc.), but we?re also at war in the United States over whether we should honor women?s reproductive and economic rights, and we?re seeing battles around the world to ensure that women everywhere feel safe in their own communities. This is not to push music into a political corner as much as it is to suggest that music and identity are always, however uncomfortably for some, joined at the hip.

But the performance in pop music that most sticks in my mind this year is 64-year-old Grace Jones performing ?Slave to the Rhythm? at February?s Diamond Jubilee concert celebration while spinning a hula hoop for the song?s entire duration. That moment was about subversive Grace?as a Jamaican woman, as cosmopolite provocateur, as fiery symbol of the post-colonial multiculture that Europe has been doing its best to contain for years?declaring her stamina and perseverance to the queen in a campy and cheeky ?I Will Survive? moment.

Given the upheaval in which we live?fears of ?fiscal cliffs? and eurozone crisis shadowed by the ongoing emergence of China and India as global economic superpowers; the coming minoritization of whites in the United States as Latinos and other ?minority? groups like women and gays enter public life in unprecedented ways?we are witnessing the West shattering and remaking itself. All of the exhausting culture and values wars that define contemporary public life are rooted in that unsettling and violent process.

And that shattering and remaking has been given a potent if inchoate soundtrack in 2012: the unbridled and restless creativity of artists as diverse as Tame Impala, THEESatisfaction, Santigold, Kendrick Lamar, The Alchemist, Death Grips, Michael Kiwanuka, and Los Miticos del Ritmo. But ?global? artists like Kenya?s Just a Band and South Africa?s Spoek Mathambo and even South Korea?s Psy?as they draw on, fuse, and synthesize world sounds and styles?have just as much or more to contribute to the conversation about the remaking of the West at this point as Westerners themselves. More than ever before, pop music is confirming that we?re all hopelessly connected to each other, and that gives me a profound sense of hope.

5 Ways This Obama Inauguration Will Be Different

1. Fewer People

President Obama?s inauguration as the first African-American president drew 1.8 million people to the National Mall?some of whom flew across the country and the world to be in D.C. for Obama?s big day. Second inaugurations tend to be more low-key, and Obama?s will be no exception. His second is expected to draw only half as many people, according to the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority. That?s probably a good thing for the National Mall: After Obama?s 2009 swearing in, the National Park Service and its partners cleaned about 100 tons of debris?including blankets, sleeping bags, and lawn chairs.

2. Downsized Celebrations

Although Obama?s first inauguration took place as the economy was cratering, that didn?t dampen the festivities. Bruce Springsteen and Bono rocked on the Mall, and the new president and first lady kicked up their heels at 10 official inaugural balls. But after a prolonged recession and an expensive reelection campaign, the president?s inaugural committee has downsized its plans. There could be as few as two official inaugural balls in 2013, according to The Wall Street Journal, and they?re slated to take place in the staid Washington Convention Center. It remains to be seen whether outside groups?like private companies and advocacy organizations in town?will similarly downsize their own party plans. As in 2009, Obama?s second inauguration will kick off with a day of community service.

3. More Corporate Money

Presidential Inauguration Committees always raise money to pay for the parade, the balls, and other festivities. Back in 2009, Obama sought to limit the influence of outside cash: He refused to accept corporate contributions, and he capped individual donations at $50,000. Four years later, big money is getting a big embrace. Obama is accepting unlimited donations from corporations, although he?s still not accepting donations from super PACs and lobbyists, The New York Times reports. The president?s finance team is offering groups that donate $1 million a special package of inaugural activities; individuals can contribute $250,000 to get the same package.

4. Cementing History, Not Making History

Obama?s reelection proves that the 2008 election wasn?t a fluke. His first victory was groundbreaking; his second gives him time to cement his legacy. Obama?s second inauguration will still allow history buffs to draw some powerful connections, however. He?ll be sworn in three weeks after the 150th?anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation and will deliver his second inaugural address on Martin Luther King Day. It might be hard for Obama (or his speechwriters) to resist referencing the civil war or the civil-rights movement in his remarks.

5. Two Swearing-In Ceremonies

The Constitution requires that new presidents be sworn in on Jan. 20, but that falls on a Sunday this year. It?s long been deemed inappropriate to host a showy inauguration ceremony on the Sabbath, so that means Obama gets to take the oath of office twice: he?ll be sworn in in a private ceremony at the White House on the 20th, and will take part in a big public ceremony at the Capitol on the 21st. The last president to take two oaths in this way? ?Ronald Reagan, in 1985.

Warm weather wipes out white Christmas wishes - The Local

Most of Germany is in the midst of a warm, damp Christmas Eve, with temperatures of up to 18 Celsius in places having replaced the heavy snowfall which hit the country a couple of weeks ago.

The German Weather Service (DWD) said on Monday that some people in the southern regions of the country could be celebrating Christmas in shorts and T-shirts, as temperatures would well into the double digits.

But the north-east was expected to remain cool, with just six degrees in areas like the Uckermark, but even this was too much for winter sports in the central Harz mountains where the tourist board said only a few ski runs remained open.

The 60 centimetres of snow that was seen on Sonnenberg for example in the middle of the month, has shrunk to around 25 centimetres, while the area was expected to be as warm as eight Celsius with rain on Monday and the coming few days.

Rain and snowmelt had the River Rhine threatening to flood in some areas, with the Cologne High Water Protection Centre registering a level of more than eight metres on Monday. It was rising by around three centimetres an hour. Ships are banned from travelling there as soon as it reaches 8.30 metres.

Cologne's old town centre was not yet affected in the middle of the morning, and does not generally flood until the Rhine reaches at least nine metres. But flood protection measures, such as mobile walls were being set up on Monday in case the river were to continue rising.

The last flooding of Cologne was in 2003, when the river level reached 9.71 metres, while during the 1995 'Flood of the Century', it reached as high as 10.69 metres.

Although the warm weather this week feels unseasonable, the DWD said it was not so unusual at this time of year.

Thomas Ruppert from the DWD said even the top expected temperatures of around 18 degrees this week were, "not something to knock you off your stool."

"A Christmas thaw is a common phenomenon," he said, pointing to the end of the 1970s and early 1980s when such conditions repeatedly stymied hopes of a white Christmas.

Tuesday is expected to be rainy for many areas, with temperatures between eight and 13 Celsius, and snow only in upper Alpine areas.

Wednesday will be cloudy with showers and although temperatures are expected to fall a little, they will still remain between five and ten degrees.

Flights hit again as winter weather continues

Several areas in western New York reported snowfalls of a foot or more and heavy snow and ice knocked out power in parts of Maine and Michigan. NBC's Scott Newell reports.

While not as severe as the two previous days, air travel delays caused by a wintry mix of snow, high winds and heavy rain continued across the country Saturday, while some areas were expecting up to a foot of snow by day's end.

The National Weather Service issued winter storm warnings Saturday for parts of Pennsylvania, West Virginia, New York and Ohio on the East Coast and also parts of Northern California and Oregon on the West Coast.

As of 6 p.m. ET Saturday, more than 6,300 flights had been delayed and 144 were canceled, according to the website FlightStats.com.

Chicago?s O?Hare International Airport and Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey were the most impacted, according to the website?s figures.

In Atlanta, at the world's busiest airport, NBC's Gabe Gutierrez finds that there weren't nearly as many cancellations on Saturday as there were Thursday and Friday in the wake of the winter storm.

On Friday, nearly 900 flights were canceled and 13,500 delayed across the country, FlightStats reported.

Weather.com said the storm was likely to linger over northern New England during the weekend.

?Winds will be the most intense from parts of southern New England and New York to the Mid-Atlantic on Saturday,? it said.??Farther to the west, the Great Lakes snowbelts and Appalachians will continue to see wind-whipped snow on Saturday.?

It warned people in those areas to be prepared for winter driving conditions with ?sudden reductions in visibility? due to the weather possible.

On Thursday, two people were killed and seven injured in a 30-vehicle pileup on Interstate 35 in Iowa. Drivers were blinded by blowing snow and didn't see vehicles that had slowed or stopped, causing a chain reaction of crashes, state police said.

After extreme weather upset travel plans in the last few days, the forecast on the horizon seems ready for Santa, with a possible dusting of snow expected in some parts of the country. TODAY's Dylan Dreyer reports.

The storm was also blamed for traffic deaths in three other states: two deaths each in Nebraska and Wisconsin; and one in Kansas.

In Utah, a woman who tried to walk for help after her car became stuck in snow died Tuesday night.

The West Coast was also seeing stormy weather.

The NWS said several inches of rain along with several feet of snow in elevated areas were expected in California and Oregon this weekend.

Asian toad stowaway gets new home in South Africa

JOHANNESBURG (AP) ? They say cats have nine lives. Now a Chinese toad has joined that reputed club of wily survivors.

South Africans are marveling at the endurance of a toad that got trapped in a cargo shipment from China to Cape Town after jumping into a porcelain candlestick. South African officials planned to put down the creature from Asia fearing it would cause harm as an invasive species if it were let go in the wild.

But the toad got a last-minute reprieve. Mango Airlines, a South African airline, transported the toad on Friday to Johannesburg for delivery to an animal sanctuary after officials decided to find a way to let the itinerant toad live.

Airline spokesman Hein Keiser says the toad has become a celebrity.

It's nickname? Jack B Nimble.

Obama nominates John Kerry as next secretary of state

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Barack Obama on Friday nominated John Kerry to replace Hillary Clinton as secretary of state, calling the veteran U.S. senator the "perfect choice" for America's top diplomat as he began reshaping his national security team for a second term.

Obama settled on Kerry, chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and the 2004 Democratic presidential candidate, after the front-runner, U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice, withdrew from consideration last week.

Even as Obama put one important piece of his revamped Cabinet in place, he held off on naming a new defense secretary. The delay came in the face of a growing backlash from critics of former Republican Senator Chuck Hagel, who is considered a leading candidate to replace Leon Panetta at the Pentagon.

With Kerry standing at his side, Obama expressed confidence that the senator - a stalwart supporter who has long coveted the State Department job - would win swift confirmation from his Senate colleagues.

"As we turn the page on a decade of war, he understands that we've got to harness all elements of American power and ensure that they're working together," Obama said. "John's earned the respect and confidence of leaders around the world. He is not going to need a lot of on-the-job training."

The announcement fell short of the White House's earlier hopes of rolling out national security appointments, including a new CIA director, all at once before Christmas. That ambition was thwarted not only by the Hagel controversy but other matters that have occupied Obama's attention - the standoff over the "fiscal cliff" and last week's Newtown gun massacre.

Kerry, 69, will take over from Clinton, who has been consistently rated as the most popular member of the president's Cabinet.

But he will also have to pick up the pieces after a scathing official inquiry found serious security lapses by the State Department in the deadly September 11 attack on the U.S. diplomatic mission in Benghazi, Libya - a report that has tarnished the final days of Clinton's tenure.

Kerry's nomination follows a political firestorm that engulfed Rice, seen as the early favorite for the State job, spearheaded by Republicans fiercely critical of her role in the administration's early explanations for the Benghazi assault.

Rice was defended by Obama, but she said on December 13 she was pulling her name from consideration to avoid a potentially lengthy and disruptive confirmation process.

Kerry, known for his role as a Democratic power broker in the Senate, offers no such challenges.

His selection sets a pragmatic tone as Obama begins overhauling his national security team.

Kerry will be the leading Cabinet member charged with tackling pressing global challenges, ranging from upheaval in the Middle East to Iran's nuclear standoff with the West and winding down the war in Afghanistan - all at a time of fiscal austerity at home.

SUBDUED NOMINATION ANNOUNCEMENT

Obama appeared subdued as he announced the nomination. He and Kerry had just returned from a funeral service for Hawaii Senator Daniel Inouye at the National Cathedral.

Kerry looked on intently as Obama spoke, nodding occasionally. But the lawmaker known for sometimes long-winded speeches was not given a chance to address reporters at the White House. Clinton was absent due to illness but issued a statement saying Kerry would offer the "highest caliber leadership" at the State Department.

Kerry, a decorated Vietnam War veteran, has forged a close working relationship with Obama and gave him the keynote speech assignment at the 2004 Democratic convention that boosted a then little-known Illinois state legislator onto the national stage, opening the way for his meteoric rise.

After losing narrowly to Republican George W. Bush in the 2004 presidential election, Kerry forged a new identity as a congressional leader on foreign policy. He often served as a low-profile emissary and diplomatic troubleshooter for the Obama White House in places like Afghanistan, Pakistan and Syria.

Kerry played the role of Mitt Romney in Obama's debate practice during the 2012 campaign, and afterwards Kerry joked that he would need an "exorcism" to get the Republican out of his system. "Nothing brings two people closer together than weeks of debate prep," Obama quipped to reporters on Friday.

White House aides acknowledge, however, that Kerry does not have as close of a personal bond with Obama as Rice has. She said, in a message on Twitter, that she looked forward to "working with him on the president's national security team."

Kerry's departure from the Senate forces Democrats to defend his seat, where the party has only a slim majority. Just-defeated Massachusetts Republican Senator Scott Brown, who took office in early 2010 after winning the last special election for a Massachusetts seat, is widely expected to run.

The drumbeat of criticism against Hagel, a moderate Republican who has often broken with his party's views, could prompt Obama to reconsider whether it would be worth the likely confirmation fight if he were to chose him for the defense post.

The administration has given no sign of dropping Hagel from the short list. On Thursday it joined allies rallying to support him against an onslaught over his record on Israel and Iran led by some pro-Israel groups and neo-conservatives, but the attacks have also come from some former colleagues on Capitol Hill.

He has also come under fire from gay rights groups for remarks questioning whether an "openly aggressively gay" nominee could be an effective U.S. ambassador. Hagel issued an apology on Friday for the 1998 comment, saying it was "insensitive."

It is the second time since Obama's re-election that the White House has had to defend a Cabinet candidate who has yet to be nominated, a source of frustration for his advisers.

Also in the mix for the Pentagon job are Michele Flournoy, a former undersecretary of defense for policy, and Ashton Carter, the current deputy defense secretary.

The top candidates for CIA director, to replace David Petraeus who stepped down over an extramarital affair, are thought to be Michael Morell, currently acting CIA director, and John Brennan, a top counterterrorism adviser to Obama and a former CIA official.

How The NRA Just Used The 3 Biggest PR Crisis Response Tricks ...

When the tragedy struck in Newtown, the National Rifle Association (NRA) decided to take down their Facebook page and go dark. In the press conference they just completed, they refused to take questions. In a world filled with conversation, the NRA chose to skip transparency and authenticity ? and instead used three time honored strategies of crisis response to help their organization weather the media storm around gun ownership. It would be easier if they stood up and said everyone should have every kind of gun and the 2nd amendment?s stated right to bear arms is irrefutable. But they didn?t.

Instead, the press conference was the NRA?s chance to lay out their brilliantly evil communications strategy in a way that will most likely shield them from long term criticism and sadly move the conversation away from guns. As experts in marketing, it may seem that there isn?t much we can do. Still, the greatest threat to a brilliant strategy is revealing the wool that is being pulled over our collective eyes.

So here?s my attempt to reveal the three big strategies and messages the NRA is using to divert attention beyond taking guns away from people or making them more difficult to get access to:

NRA Message #1 ? Guns are not the problem ? unsafe and unprotected schools are the problem.

Strategy: Elevate the issue. If the issue being debated is easy access to deadly weapons, then the NRA will lose. If the issue, instead, becomes that our schools are not safe enough ? then the NRA has a chance. So we saw over and over again throughout the press conference that NRA CEO Wayne Lapierre talked about the ways that our schools aren?t safe enough, and called on the government to spend whatever would be necessary to better protect schools.

NRA Message #2 ? The only defense against a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun.

Strategy: Play offense instead of defense. When it comes to defending anyone?s right to have guns, the NRA would have a difficult argument because anyone can point to mentally unstable people like the shooter* as reasons for why gun access should not be so free. Instead, the NRA laid out plans to introduce a comprehensive ?school shield program? led by independent experts. Introducing such a program lets the NRA flip the issue to go on the offense to solve what they have already positioned as the biggest issue ? school safety.

NRA Message #3 ? Our culture of violence is really to blame for mass shootings.

Strategy: Change the bad guy. A topic that has not been getting nearly enough attention is how violent video games and ?blood soaked films? are creating a desensitized culture of violence. The last mass shooting was at the opening of a very violent Batman film. In his short talk, Lapierre called this a ?race to the bottom? and likened it to pornography. Add to that the media?s coverage of the shooter and how they have turned him into something of a celebrity, and the argument that the real bad guy is media and entertainment (and not guns) is complete.

Time will tell if the media and public gets wise to these strategies ? but the more we can publicize them, hopefully the more awareness people have of just how strategically they are being manipulated by masterful communications ? and perhaps they can build a more informed point of view as a result. ?If you?d like for that to happen, please consider sharing this post.

*Note ? As a member of the extended media writing about the Newtown tragedy, I have chosen not to mention the shooter by name. Just like NFL games don?t show streakers on national TV as a deterrent for fame seekers, I think this is one small step anyone writing or speaking about tragedies like this should choose to take. Black piranha, megapiranha have most powerful bites of fish living or extinct, researcher finds

Dec. 20, 2012 ? The black piranha and the extinct giant piranha, or megapiranha, have the most powerful bites of carnivorous fishes, living or extinct, once body size is taken into account, find researchers in a paper recently published in Scientific Reports. The research paper, "Mega-Bites: Extreme jaw forces of living and extinct piranhas," highlights the piranhas' specialized jaw morphology, which allows them to attack and bite chunks out of much larger prey.

Guillermo Ort?, the George Washington University Louis Weintraub Professor of Biology in the Columbian College of Arts and Sciences, is one of the authors of the paper. His research focuses on the evolution of fishes in general, but specializes on Amazonian fishes, to unravel evolutionary relationships based on DNA sequence data. In 2010, Dr. Orti along with other researchers participated in an expedition to the Xingu and Iriri rivers in Amazonia to collect the data on the fish.

Piranhas' aggressive nature, relatively small size and accessible populations make them a suitable group of predatory vertebrates in which to study the evolution of extreme biting capabilities. Even at their small body sizes, diet studies indicate that piranhas will attack and bite chunks of bony fins and flesh from prey many times larger than themselves.

In spite of their reputation, no quantitative data or empirical estimates regarding the piranhas biting abilities were available.

The paper reports the first bite-force measurements taken from wild specimens of the largest species of carnivorous piranha in the Amazon, the black piranha, and describes the underlying functional morphology of the jaws that allows this creature to bite with a force more than 30 times greater than its weight. The powerful bite is achieved primarily due to the large muscle mass of the black piranha's jaw and the efficient transmission of its large contractile forces through a highly modified jaw-closing lever.

The expedition was organized and filmed by National Geographic. A subsequent program called Megapiranha aired on the National Geographic Channel featured the expedition and focused on the creature that existed millions of years ago.

"It was very exciting to participate in this project, travel one more time to the Amazon to be able to directly measure bite forces in the wild," said Dr. Orti. "I learned a lot of biomechanics from my colleagues while collecting valuable specimens for my own research."

The authors also reconstructed the bite force of the megapiranha, showing that for its relatively diminutive body size, the bite of this fossil piranha dwarfed that of other extinct mega-predators, including the whale-eating shark and the Devonian placoderm. Research at the Ort? lab at GW continues to focus on reconstructing the genealogical tree of fishes including piranhas based on genomic data.

Contracts are based on each partner doing what is expected. In most business contracts, expectations, rewards, and penalties are spelled out. In the marriage contract, the agreements are far less defined on paper. This creates situations where each partner may have different expectations from the marriage.

Trust can be broken in ways that are not just sexual infidelity.

When this trust is broken, decisions have to be made regarding what to do next. You and your partner need to have some guidelines about how to rebuild the trust and the relationship.

Recognize that trust is a two-way street.

In a marriage, getting even can be an easy trap to fall into. It usually plays out like this: since you did that; I can do this. Unfortunately, this approach too often results in divorce. If you feel betrayed or cheated, you need to evaluate with your partner?s help why this event happened to make you feel this way. Eventually, you will end up here. So, it is better to just decide not to break another level of trust just to show your partner how it feels.

Decide what types of trust matter the most to you.

Some people agonize over sexual misconduct but do not seem to care if the finances are in the trash. For others, it might be a failure of their partner to be supportive in a family fight. The list goes on. It is possible that you may have been sending or receiving signals that were misinterpreted as permission to break a specific level of trust. Figure out what is important to you and your spouse before going too deeply into fixing the problems.

How early in the marriage has the trust been broken?

If your spouse is cheating after about a week of marriage, this probably signals a doomed relationship. A short affair after decades of marriage may be able to be fixed. It will still hurt, but the history may prove that your partner has always been trustworthy before. He or she probably will be again if you can work together to fix what is wrong with your relationship.

Consider marriage counseling as a couple.

Never seek counseling as an individual unless it is your only choice. Most advice is weak or wrong when only one side of the story is told. If you go willingly together to the counselor, the results will most likely be quick and dramatic. Do the homework that the counselor assigns for best outcomes.

Work on communication within the relationship.

Talk, talk, and talk some more with your partner. Broken trust usually is associated with broken communication. Fix the communication and the trust will grow again. Do not stop talking when it feels like things are better. Keep talking so that things will not slide downhill again.

Expect that change will be needed in several areas.

Relationships rarely falter because of only one problem area. For a partner to be willing to break your trust, a variety of problems usually exist. Look at this effort as a project. Keep repairing broken areas until the relationship is solid again.

Limit the number of people who give you advice.

One of the big problems in marriages stems from too many people offering too much advice to one partner. Everyone needs to vent sometimes. However, if you depend on the amateur advice from all of your associates, you will be steered wrong more often than not. Keep your advisers to a minimum. Learn to talk to your spouse when you are upset rather than all of the coworkers and neighbors.
