Video: Candidates tied in most Colorado polls

>>> leading colorado 's early vote . republicans have cast 39% of the ballots, democrats 37%. let me in bring in colorado congresswoman diana dagett. a lot to it talk about. first, let's talk about the ground game. you have former colorado democratic party chairman. he's now an independent pole ster. he told t"the washington post " that president obama should be doing better, and he isn't. it's the worst swing state of the bunch of them according to this quote here. what is your take on the ground game there?

>> well, i traveled around the state last weekend with a group of people, and i've been going to the early voting centers and to the staging areas. i've been involved in politics 30 years and never seen a better ground game than the obama ground game in year.

>> why is it so effective. why are you impressed this year especially over four years ago which is tremendous.

>> it's better than four years ago. we have field offices, the obama campaign over 60 field offices throughout the state of colorado to roughly 19 that governor romney has. what that does is it lets people go out right into their communities and canvas and get the early votes. in some votes places, they had two or three times the number of people that they thought they would have to go canvassing. yesterday we had 16,000 people in denver. some went to the polls to vote right there. people were getting people out. really, i have never seen a better ground game than this obama ground game.

>> you have with the president. you showed us earlier you weretic alreadily fired up regarding the remarks made by richard mourdock the senate candidate out of indiana . he said his words were twisted. earlier senator john mccain demanded an apology or alluding to the fact he would take back his endorsement. that all changed. senator mccain is still endorsing. the ad features governor romney is all up in indiana . i say that to point out, though, there's one ap poll indicating that the gap between governor romney and president obama when it came to female voters was all but done, closed according to that new ap poll . combine those two stories, how does that affect women in colorado or the vote women present election day when this is happening in indiana ?

>> well, colorado has a tradition of defeating both ballot initiatives and candidates who take such extreme views as the ones richard mourdock said. two years ago michael bennett was elected to the senate bucking the tide to colorado . he did it by appealing to women voters. his opponent took similar views to mourdock and governor romney and paul ryan . he supported this personhood amendment. he was against abortion even in the case of rape and incest. we won that senate seat because of this. these issues are all over the state of colorado right now. you know, the polling is not instantaneous, and i think you're going to see a real shift in these polls once women in particular start to realize it's not an isolated example with, for example, representative akin saying this. it's a pervasive view throughout the republican party , and don't forget, paul ryan has voted for her proposals in congress that say exactly this.

>> congresswoman, thank you so much for your time. you've been busy, and perhaps not as busy as the president but hanging in there yesterday in colorado . thank you very much. greatly appreciate your time.

Fister takes hard liner off head and loss

By JOSH DUBOW

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Doug Fister took the Giants' best shot without even flinching.

Fister overcame a line-drive single off his head to take a shutout bid into the seventh inning for Detroit before the Tigers lost Game 2 of the World Series 2-0 to San Francisco on Thursday night.

"I'm fine," Fister said. "I got a little bump. No damage. Just a matter of I threw a changeup that he squared up and it came right back at me."

Fister ended up with the hard-luck loss when he allowed a leadoff single to Hunter Pence in the seventh and reliever Drew Smyly was unable to strand him in part because of a perfect bunt that never rolled foul.

It was remarkable that Fister was even in the game that long after it looked as if he could have been knocked out in a scary moment in the second inning. Gregor Blanco hit a line drive that struck Fister just above the right ear with a runner on first and two outs. The ball ricocheted into short center for a single.

"Whoa!" umpire Dan Iassogna said as he popped out from behind the plate, adding: "Doug, you OK?" when he got to the mound.

"I was scared to death when it happened," Tigers manager Jim Leyland said. "I didn't really realize exactly how it hit him. It kind of grazed I want to say the side of his head, the back of his head. It was a scary moment, obviously, but he was fine."

Fister looked unfazed by the blow and remained in the game after being checked out by a trainer, Leyland and pitching coach Jeff Jones.

"They asked me the typical concussion questions. He obviously saw in my eyes I was OK," Fister said. "I'm not concerned. I have a minor bump. According to my dad my whole life his saying has always been if I got hit in the head I'd be OK. That's how I take it."

Fister answered every question correctly on the mound and even added that he would get the third out.

"He didn't seem scared," first baseman Prince Fielder said. "He definitely showed some toughness."

Fister then walked Brandon Crawford to load the bases but escaped the jam by retiring fellow pitcher Madison Bumgarner on a soft looper to shortstop Jhonny Peralta.

The 6-foot-8 right-hander didn't allow another hit until Pablo Sandoval singled with two outs in the sixth, retiring 12 straight batters after the walk to Crawford.

"It was scary at the moment but then he seemed to shake it off," catcher Gerald Laird said. "This guy's tough. I was surprised. The way (the batter) hit it and the way it hit his head, it was scary. For him to bounce back and pitch like he did, that says a lot about him."

Leyland sent Fister back out for the seventh with 108 pitches to face the right-handed hitting Pence before a run of three straight lefties came to the plate. Pence ended Fister's night with a single to left field on his 114th pitch.

That proved costly. Smyly walked Brandon Belt, and Blanco reached on a bunt single that Smyly, Laird and third baseman Miguel Cabrera tried to will foul. But the ball tantalizingly stayed on the dirt between the foul line and infield grass before rolling to a stop in fair territory, loading the bases with no outs for the Giants.

Leyland chose to play the middle of the infield back to avoid a big inning. But that decision allowed a run to score when Brandon Crawford bounced into a 4-6-3 double play.

"It's not debatable to me," Leyland said. "Some people might debate that, but I felt we had to take our best shot to come out of it with one run because if we don't score, it doesn't make any difference anyway."

Fister allowed one run and four hits with one walk with three strikeouts. He became the first Tigers pitcher to last at least five innings in five straight postseason starts. But he is winless in three postseason outings this year because the bullpen blew leads his first two times on the mound.

"It was a tough night," Fister said. "Obviously we had a couple of balls that didn't go our way. It's OK. We're going to come back."

The Tigers now find themselves in a daunting 2-0 hole because the offense generated nothing against Bumgarner and the bullpen. Only one World Series team has overcome such a deficit since the New York Mets did it in 1986.

Detroit's best chance at scoring was thwarted by another questionable decision. With the burly Fielder at first base and no outs in the second, Delmon Young grounded a double down the left-field line. Blanco picked up the ball after it caromed off the fence in foul territory and threw to second baseman Marco Scutaro near third base.

Third-base coach Gene Lamont waved Fielder home and he was tagged out by catcher Buster Posey just before touching the plate. Fielder had been sent home from first just three times on 10 doubles. The fourth one proved costly.

"We wanted to be aggressive, and I think he got just a little overaggressive, and it was a bang-bang play," Leyland said.

Muslim pilgrims stone the devil in symbolic hajj rite

MINA, Saudi Arabia (AP) ? Millions of pilgrims in Saudi Arabia on Friday furiously cast pebbles in a symbolic stoning of the devil, carrying out a final rite of hajj, as Muslims around the world celebrated the start of Islam's biggest holiday, the Feast of Sacrifice.

After stoning three walls symbolizing Satan in a rejection of sin and temptation, male pilgrims changed out of the seamless terrycloth robes of pilgrimage and shaved their heads, as a sign of renewal. Women ? and those men who prefer not to undergo a complete shave ? had a lock of hair clipped.

Though pilgrims will repeat the stoning ritual for at least two more days, they could now call themselves "hajjis," referring to those who have done the pilgrimage.

Malik Evangelatos, from Ukiah, Calif., said the experience felt "wonderful, satisfying and humbling."

Evangelatos, who converted to Islam six years ago, said the simple pilgrim's garment that he had worn the past few days helped him "see the bigger picture in life and go back changed, happy and appreciative." For him, the hajj brought a chance to be truly equal regardless of ethnicity or race.

"It has probably been the highlight of my life outside of getting married and having a baby," he said. "You feel an emotional release. It is something that is not recreated anywhere else in the world."

For the stoning ritual, the 3.4 million pilgrims from around the world filed in crowds through a multi-level structure housing the walls symbolizing the devil in the desert valley of Mina, outside the holy city of Mecca.

The structure of ramps maintains traffic flow, moving pilgrims on four levels past the walls, as they throw seven pebbles at each. Some have criticized the nearly kilometer-long (0.6 mile) cement structure, which resembles a mega parking garage with escalators, saying it detracts from the simplicity and spiritual aspect of hajj.

But the facility protects lives, Hajj Ministry Director General Amin Fatani, told The Associated Press. The stoning ritual has been the scene of deadly crushes and stampedes killing hundreds ? the most recent in 2006 ? as pilgrims tried to squeeze past and throw their stones, especially since there used to be pillars instead of walls, meaning the massive throngs had to focus on a smaller point. Even with the walls, pilgrims on one side often get hit by pebbles thrown by people on the other side.

"The life of a hajji is precious to the government and their safety comes first," Fatani said. "If we leave hajj the way we had it been before, there will be a catastrophe from the first day."

On Friday, Muslims marked the holiday, known in Arabic as Eid al-Adha, commemorating what Muslims believe was Prophet Abraham's willingness to sacrifice his son Ismail ? the Biblical Ishmael, though Christians and Jews believe his other son Isaac was the near-sacrifice ? as a test of his faith from God.

Around the world, Muslims slaughtered lambs, sheep and other livestock in remembrance, giving the meat to the poor. At Mina, pilgrims purchased tokens to have a sheep slaughtered at nearby slaughterhouses.

?

The day of stoning marked an exhausting trek for pilgrims between the string of ritual sites strung across the desert outside Mecca. They spent the day Thursday at Mount Arafat in a day of contemplation and prayers to wipe away past sins. Then overnight, they went to the nearby plain of Muzdalifah to collect the pebbles they would use in the stoning ritual before heading to Mina by the morning.

Between the movements, many also went back into Mecca to again circumambulate the Kaaba, the cube-shaped structure toward which Muslims pray every day ? Islam's holiest site.

Tunisian pharmacist Ahlam Zahar said she teared up seeing the sheer number of people praying in unison as she approached the Kaaba late Thursday before coming to Mina for the stoning on Friday.

"Hajj needs energy and concentration," she said. "It's really hard under the heat."

For most pilgrims coming from poorer Muslim nations, it is common to sleep in the streets and walk the trajectory among the sites, a distance of around 30 kilometers (19 miles). Many have children or elderly relatives with them.

"I envy them," Ahmed Fahmy said of those enduring the difficult trek. "These people are following the footsteps of the Prophet (Muhammad). They could manage to get rides, but they exhaust themselves for the bigger reward with Allah."

Fahmy, the general manager of the Cairo-based Islamic Huda TV, said this was his 11th Hajj to complete. Despite feeling tired afterward, the reward of the pilgrimage is in the hardship one faces, he said.

"You feel obedient to Allah," Fahmy said. "I feel like it's something that is entirely for the pleasure of Allah."

2016 Copa America in US not done deal

Associated Press Sports

updated 5:13 p.m. ET Oct. 25, 2012

NEW YORK (AP) - More negotiations are needed before Copa America, the championship tournament for South America, is staged in the United States in 2016.

An announcement that the tournament would take place in the United States was made Wednesday by CONMEBOL, the confederation overseeing South American soccer. But it was premature, according to CONCACAF, which runs the sport in North and Central America and the Caribbean.

US Soccer Federation President Sunil Gulati says Thursday that his organization has not agreed to host the tournament or participate in it "at this time."

The tournament would celebrate the 100th anniversary of CONMEBOL.

Can Pals help kids get their voices heard

Message from Me isn't the only way Carnegie Mellon's CREATE Labis helping kids communicate. The lab's Hear Me team has come up with Can Pals, a clever twist on the tin can phone that helps students share their stories with the world. Kids record their non-fictional tales on computers or via mics brought in by the Hear Me team, who will edit and upload them to the site and transfer them onto the electronic cans. Afterwards, kids can draw a picture or add some text to a label, which is adhered to the outside.

The Hear Me team then brings them to another school, where the stories are shared with other students, who can pull off the labels and respond to the speakers. The group has also designed CanEX displays that are already at some businesses around town, letting customers catch a glimpse into the lives of local children. CREATE calls it an "empowerment tool for advocacy" -- we can't help but refer to it as This American Life or The Moth for kids. Either way, pretty cool.

Imprisoned detective may pose risk to star clients

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Four years after a private eye went to prison for wiretapping phones of the rich and famous on behalf of celebrities and Hollywood heavyweights, his clients are facing hefty bills for his skullduggery.

In the first of more than a dozen lawsuits against Anthony Pellicano's well-heeled clients, a jury last week ruled against the ex-wife of a billionaire philanthropist, awarding $4 million to his three adult children and former personal assistant after she violated their privacy.

The verdict could spell trouble for other former clients who have been sued, such as Paramount studio head Brad Grey and one-time superagent Michael Ovitz.

The case against the ex-wife, Jacqueline Colburn, is the first to be tried before a jury stemming from a criminal probe that ensnared Pellicano for targeting Sylvester Stallone, Garry Shandling and Kevin Nealon and for work he did for others like Chris Rock and an attorney who represented MGM mogul Kirk Kerkorian in a child custody battle.

Pellicano, 68, is now serving 15 years in a federal prison in Texas after being convicted in 2008 of racketeering and more than six dozen other counts, including conspiracy, wire fraud and wiretapping. He is scheduled to be released in March 2019.

The trial billed as a blockbuster that would reveal the seedier side of Hollywood fizzled in the end as Pellicano kept silent, acting as his own lawyer.

The evidence showed he dug up dirt on clients' rivals by bribing phone company employees to install wiretapping software and had rogue police officers search databases for personal information. The information was used in hardball negotiations for business disputes, divorces and lawsuits.

Clients such as Grey, Ovitz and comedian Rock were never charged in the case and they insisted they didn't know about Pellicano's tactics. Kerkorian also has said that he had no knowledge of any wiretapping being used.

Grey and Ovitz are now facing lawsuits that could be costly and where the evidence is potentially stronger than the Colburn case, which relied largely on testimony and not on FBI reports or damning audio tapes made by Pellicano.

"I would think people will think long and hard about their exposure," said attorney Lawrence Segal, who represented Richard Colburn's children. "A lot of defendants may be thinking that in the absence of actual recordings they stand a decent chance of a defense. But we were able to prevail on a largely circumstantial case."

About a dozen lawsuits have moved slowly through the legal system alleging wiretapping and privacy invasion. Among the other defendants are AT&T and the cities of Beverly Hills and Los Angeles, where the police officers who provided information to Pellicano worked.

Most of the lawsuits are pending before a judge but have been mired by appeals in the criminal case, which allows Pellicano and others to preserve their right against self-incrimination, and the exchange of documents between attorneys was put on hold for many months. No trial dates have even been set.

A settlement in some of the lawsuits has been reached, said attorney Brian Kabateck, who represents several Pellicano victims, but a deal hasn't been finalized. He said the Colburn verdict provides some reassurance to his clients.

"It shows that juries are still outraged about this behavior even though it was many years ago," he said. "I think it sends a message to the defendants that they are going to have to pay real money."

The verdict in the Colburn case is a fraction of the fortune billionaire philanthropist left behind when he died in 2004 at age 92.

Evidence showed that his eighth wife, Jacqueline, who was nearly 50 years younger, paid Pellicano at least $115,000 to snoop on her husband after he was caught having phone sex with another woman, according to the lawsuit.

Ex-Pellicano employee Richard Campau testified that Colburn was in the private eye's office regularly listening to audio tapes of calls to and from the family home. Physical therapist David Powers also testified that Colburn bragged to him that she had hired the best private investigator in Los Angeles and he was using wiretaps.

There were an estimated 500 calls that were wiretapped by Pellicano over a 10-month period which captured numerous personal, medical and business matters involving the three adult children from a prior marriage and the ex-personal assistant, all of whom believed their conversations were private.

They "never knew of the surreptitious eavesdropping and certainly never agreed to put their personal lives on public display," said plaintiffs' attorney Wayne Skigen.

The lawsuit focused solely on the ex-wife and Pellicano and wasn't bogged down by suing large entities, such as the phone company or any cities. Segal and Skigen are seeking a default judgment against Pellicano because he hasn't responded to their claims.

Attempts to reach Jacqueline Colburn's attorney, Stanley McKiernan, were unsuccessful Wednesday. McKiernan has said there isn't any evidence showing Pellicano wiretapped on his client's behalf.

Federal authorities started investigating Pellicano after former Los Angeles Times reporter Anita Busch found a dead fish with a rose in its mouth on her car along with a sign reading "stop" in June 2002.

Busch testified at the criminal trial that she believed Ovitz and Pellicano had orchestrated the threat because she co-wrote articles about the agent's alleged financial troubles while his talent agency was in talks to be acquired.

Ovitz is a defendant in a lawsuit filed by Busch. He has yet to give a deposition.

A look at recent tech-industry earnings

Technology companies have begun releasing their earnings reports for the latest quarter. The reports come as consumers shift their spending toward tablets and a weak global economy curbs corporate spending on computers. They also come as Microsoft prepares to release a new version of Windows on Friday. Here is a summary of recent earnings and reports for selected technology companies and what they reveal about the state of spending and the overall economy.

? Oct. 5: Samsung Electronics Co. forecast another record quarterly operating profit, likely driven by strong sales of high-end smartphones that offset weak semiconductor orders. Samsung estimated that its July-September operating income nearly doubled to 8.1 trillion won ($7.3 billion) from 4.25 trillion won a year earlier. The result was better than the market consensus of 7.6 trillion won. Full results are expected Oct. 26.

? Oct. 16: Intel Corp., the world's largest chipmaker, says net income fell 14 percent from last year in the latest quarter, and it's looking at tough conditions in the new quarter. Intel blames a difficult global economy for declining sales, but analysts believe a shift in spending from PCs to tablets and smartphones may be contributing.

IBM Corp. says revenue slipped below Wall Street's expectations in the third quarter as the technology company dealt with jittery customers and a weakening euro that undercut its results. Despite the problems posed by the wobbly economy, IBM's earnings held steady.

? Oct. 17: eBay Inc. says its third-quarter net income grew 22 percent, helped by higher revenue at its PayPal payments service and the marketplaces business that includes eBay.com.

? Oct. 18: Google Inc. reports earnings and revenue that fell well below analyst projections. Most of Google's third-quarter headaches were concentrated in Motorola Mobility, the troubled cellphone maker that the company bought for $12.4 billion in May.

Microsoft Corp. says net income fell 22 percent in the latest quarter as it deferred revenue from the sale of its upcoming Windows 8 operating system to PC makers ? and as PC sales in general took a dive. The economic troubles in Europe also weighed on results, which missed Wall Street expectations.

Chipmaker Advanced Micro Devices Inc. says it will cut nearly 1,800 jobs, about 15 percent of its workforce, by the end of the year in order to reduce spending in the face of dwindling sales.

Verizon Communications Inc. reports a blow-out number of new devices on its wireless network, boosted by the revolutionary Share Everything plan, which made it cheaper for households to add wireless service to non-phone devices like tablets and laptops. Verizon Wireless added a net 1.5 million devices to contract-based plans in the third quarter, more than it has in many years.

? Monday: Yahoo Inc. issued a third-quarter earnings report that topped analyst estimates. Yahoo's net revenue barely grew at a time when advertisers are spending more money marketing their products and services online. But the numbers were slightly better than analysts projected. It's the first quarter under new CEO Marissa Mayer.

? Tuesday: Facebook Inc. reports third-quarter results that inch past Wall Street's expectations, offering evidence that the company is making inroads in mobile advertising ? a longtime concern among investors.

Netflix Inc. cut its prediction of how many video streaming subscribers it would add this year after its third-quarter additions of 1.2 million came in at the low end of the company's forecasts.

Apple refreshes its lineup of Mac computers and introduces a 13-inch MacBook Pro model with a sharper, Retina display. It announces new iMacs for later this year, along with a faster, full-sized iPad tablet and a smaller one called the iPad Mini.

? Wednesday: Zynga Inc. reports stronger-than-expected revenue for the third quarter. The company, which has been trying to convince investors that it can revive growth, says it has signed a deal to offer online poker and casino games, played with real money, in the U.K. It plans to launch those games in the first half of 2013.

AT&T Inc. reports numbers showing the flow of customers to the carrier slowed further, putting the company far behind rival Verizon Wireless. AT&T added a net 151,000 new customers on contract-based plans from July through September, the lowest number for that period since at least 2003.

Coming up:

? Thursday: Apple Inc., Sprint Nextel Corp., Amazon.com Inc.

? Friday: Samsung Electronics Co., Comcast Corp.

? Nov. 1: Sony Corp., LinkedIn Corp.

? Nov. 8: Groupon Inc.

? Nov. 13: Cisco Systems Inc.

? Nov. 20: Hewlett-Packard Co., Dell Inc.

? Dec. 20: Research In Motion Ltd.

Billionaire Adelson, wife give new $10 million to Romney "Super PAC"

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Top Republican donors Sheldon Adelson and his wife gave another $10 million to the "Super PAC" backing Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney in October, saying they hoped to "level the playing field" with Democrats ahead of the November 6 election.

In a campaign year of unprecedented contributions, Adelson and his wife Miriam have stood out above the rest.

The 79-year-old billionaire chairman of Las Vegas Sands Corp, Adelson emerged as the Republican Party's biggest patron in the 2012 campaign, pouring at least $47 million into Republican coffers with his wife.

The Adelsons gave $5 million each to the pro-Romney Super PAC Restore Our Future, accounting for about half of the fund's cash raised from October 1 through 17, according to Federal Election Commission filings released on Thursday. The filings are the last disclosures before the November 6 elections.

In a statement on Thursday, the Adelsons said they were exercising their "privileges" of free speech to counter the millions of dollars raised by President Barack Obama as well as contributions from liberal billionaire George Soros and labor unions.

"Our family has felt an obligation to help level the playing field by providing support to the candidates and causes on the other side of the equation," according to the statement provided by a Sands spokesman.

A series of U.S. court cases in recent years have shined a spotlight on political spending as a form of free speech.

The rulings spawned Super PACs, outside groups that can raise and spend unlimited funds but cannot formally coordinate with official campaigns.

Soros, a billionaire financier, held the previous political donation record with $27.5 million contributed to Democrats in 2004. In October, Soros gave $1 million to the pro-Obama Super PAC.

The Adelsons have also donated to Super PACs helping Republicans in Congress. They were the largest donors behind the party's convention in Tampa, Florida, in late August.

During the Republican primaries, the Adelsons used their fortune to attack Romney. They gave up to $20 million to presidential hopeful Newt Gingrich, who won the South Carolina primary.

The Adelsons became Romney donors in June when the candidate became Obama's remaining Republican challenger.

Forbes estimates Adelson's fortune to be $20.5 billion.

In September, Adelson told Politico he planned to spend up to $100 million, or "whatever it takes," to defeat Obama.

Adelson may have given another $20 million to $30 million to fundraising groups that do not need to report their contributors, according to Politico.

Adelson has also used his contributions to push for a stronger U.S. defense of Israel's sovereignty. He is a director of the Republican Jewish Coalition and has called Obama's Israel positions too soft.

In the previous presidential campaign of 2008, Adelson was a much less prominent donor, giving about $100,000 to Republican candidates and party funds, according to the Center for Responsive Politics, a non-partisan group that tracks spending.

Atlanta chefs build recipes around their Asian ingredient obsessions ...

Angus Brown of Octopus Bar

"This dish is so beautiful and awesome. I serve it with a large plate of cilantro, Thai basil, mint, thinly sliced green onion, cucumber, thin slices of avocado, and a big bowl of steamed rice. Makes me hungry just thinking about it."

Steamed whole red snapper with sambal paste

Ingredients:

  • Sambal paste:
  • 1/4 cup cilantro stems
  • 3 garlic cloves
  • 1 shallot roughly chopped
  • 2 tablespoons gochujang (Korean fermented red chili paste)
  • 1/4 cup sambal
  • Juice from half a lime

Directions: With a mortar and pestle grind cilantro stems. Add garlic and shallot and pound well. In a small bowl, combine the remaining ingredients and set aside.

1 whole wild red snapper, 2-3 1/2 pounds, scaled and cleaned

Salt and pepper

Directions: Simmer a small amount of water in a wok or pan large enough to hold a bamboo steamer. Score each side of fish about a 1/4 of an inch deep three times. Season the fish inside and out with salt and fresh ground pepper. Rub the sambal paste on the entire fish as well as the inside. Place fish on a large plate big enough to fit inside the steamer basket. Place in the steamer basket and cover. Allow the fish to steam 8-10 minutes or until the flesh comes off the bone easily. Collect all the liquid from the steamed fish and pour it back over the fish.

Angus Brown is currently the executive chef at Octopus Bar where a version of this dish can currently be found.

Brandon Ley of Joystick Gamebar

"Working with Sriracha was a challenge, not because of its spiciness but because of the garlic. But I had a lot of fun with it. A little goes a long way and as a result the Cock's Comb definitely has a kick to it. I took inspiration from the flavor profile of Thai food and attempted to marry that with the time-honored cocktail formula of sweet, sour, bitter, and booze."

Cock's Comb

Ingredients:

  • 3 healthy dashes Angostura bitters
  • 1/2 ounce agave-Sriracha syrup*
  • 1/2 ounce fresh lemon juice
  • 1? ounces aged rum (Ron Abuelo A?ejo works great)
  • Lemon twist for garnish

Directions: Add all ingredients (except lemon twist) to shaker. Add ice and shake. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Garnish with lemon twist, making sure to express oils over the drink. Pairing suggestion: This drink would probably be delicious with mac and cheese.

*Agave-Sriracha Syrup: 1 part Sriracha, 2 parts water, 6 parts agave syrup (look for the lighter, non-amber kind).

Brandon Ley is co-owner and resident coctelero (read: cocktail geek) of Joystick. When he's not learning to be a classic arcade game surgeon, he is happy making you delicious cocktails.

Ryan Hidinger of Staplehouse

"Lan Chi is my go-to Asian condiment. It has great depth of flavor and texture with chunky fermented garlic and ground chili peppers. I use it to make a dressing for a warm fish salad for family meal. When butchering fish you tend to get a few odd end pieces. I cook them off and flake them into a salad of Napa cabbage, red onion, cilantro, scallions and jalape?os. Add the dressing below and you have an awesome quick meal before the dinner rush starts! Lan Chi is available at Asian markets throughout Atlanta."

Lan Chi dressing

Ingredients

  • 3 tablespoons mayonnaise
  • 1 tablespoon Lan Chi (if you can't find Lan Chi, sub sambal or Sriracha)
  • 2 dashes fish sauce
  • juice of 1/2 a lime
  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar

Directions: Mix together in a bowl and adjust seasoning to your preference.

Ryan Hidinger is the chef at Prelude to Staplehouse, a supper club he operates with his wife Jennifer in anticipation of their future restaurant, Staplehouse.

Shane Devereux of The Lawrence

"Fish sauce is extremely different cooked than straight up. The pungent saltiness develops other flavors when cooked, but it tastes great right out of the bottle."

Crispy Pig Ears

Ingredients:

  • 5 pounds pig ears
  • 1 gallon of water
  • 2 star anise pods
  • 2 cloves, whole
  • 2 cinnamon sticks, crushed
  • 1/2 tablespoon whole black peppercorns
  • 1 tablespoon coriander, whole
  • 1/8 cup salt
  • ? cup fish sauce
  • ? pound ginger, smashed
  • 10 cloves garlic, whole
  • 3 large shallots, sliced
  • 1 tangerine, halved
  • oil for frying

Directions: Combine all ingredients, except frying oil, in a large pot and simmer on low heat for 10 hours. Strain the ears from the liquid and layer in a large casserole dish that has been lined with plastic wrap. Cover with plastic wrap. Apply pressure with another container of the same size weighted on top. This pressure will allow the ears to adhere to one another, forming a sort of sheet. Refrigerate for 24 hours. Remove ears from dish, ideally in one piece, and slice into thin strips. Heat oil to 350 degrees. Fry to goodness. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

In addition to executive chef duties at SoundTable, Shane Devereux is the executive chef and partner at the Lawrence as well as Peasant Bistro. A version of this recipe can currently be found at the Lawrence.

Obama slams Mourdock rape remarks on 'Tonight''

BURBANK, California (Reuters) - President Barack Obama suspended the levity during an interview with late-night TV talk show host Jay Leno on Wednesday to address a Republican Senate candidate's assertion that pregnancies resulting from rape are intended by God and to express confidence that Washington could soon address the looming "fiscal cliff."

"I don't know how these guys come up with these ideas. Let me make a very simple proposition: rape is rape. It is a crime," Obama said on NBC's "The Tonight Show."

"This is exactly why you don't want a bunch of politicians, mostly male, making decisions about women's healthcare."

Indiana Republican Senate candidate Richard Mourdock's comments that pregnancies caused by rape are "something God intended to happen" echoed across the U.S. media and sent ripples through political circles ahead of the November 6 election.

The Obama campaign, which enjoys leads among women voters in many election battleground states, sought swiftly to connect Mourdock with Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney. This summer Romney had to distance himself from remarks by another Republican Senate candidate, Todd Akin of Missouri, about what he called "legitimate rape."

In an interview full of jokes about marriage, Halloween and other topics, the Democratic president made a few serious comments, mostly about the hottest topic of the election: the economy.

Asked about the so-called fiscal cliff - a combination of automatic spending cuts and tax hikes set to kick in early next year - Obama said he was confident that a solution could be found before the end of the year.

"Solving this is not that hard. It requires some tough choices," Obama said, adding that some programs had to be cut and tax rates should go up for people making more than $250,000 a year.

"I hope that we can get it done by the end of this year. It just requires some compromise, which shouldn't be a dirty word."

On the economic crisis gripping the European Union, Obama said countries have been "kind of muddling along" and "they didn't respond as quickly as they could."

The United States is working with those nations to make sure they have a credible plan to maintain the unity of Europe, he added.

In a lighter moment, Obama joked about real estate mogul and TV personality Donald Trump, who recently posted a video challenging Obama to release documents about his education.

Trump has persistently questioned whether Obama, a native of Hawaii, was actually born in the United States, and Obama played off Trump's theories about his origins.

"This all dates back to when we were growing up together in Kenya," Obama joked. "We had, you know, constant run-ins on the soccer field. He wasn't very good and resented it."

Looming 'fiscal cliff' threatens state budgets

By Graham Vyse, Investigative Reporting Workshop, American University

Betsey Daley is worried.

As the Virginia Senate Finance Committee?s staff director, she?s preparing for the impact of what?s known as the ?fiscal cliff,? a $607 billion bundle of federal tax increases and automatic spending cuts that could savage state budgets ? and return the nation to recession ? beginning in first days of 2013.

Unlike most states, Virginia has a $30 million emergency fund set aside to soften the blow of this massive budget contraction, but Daley and her colleagues in state government are still anxious.

They know a third of Virginia?s economy depends on federal spending. They know hundreds of thousands of Virginians? jobs are in jeopardy in the next year alone. What they don?t know ? and what no one knows ? is whether Congress will act to avert this crisis.

?Are they going to kick the can down the road? Are these cuts going into place? It?s just fraught with uncertainly,? Daley said.

That uncertainty is being felt in state capitals nationwide, according to Jeff Hurley, a senior policy specialist at the National Conference of?State Legislatures.

?States are closely linked to what the federal government does,? he said. ?There?s a severe correlation between the two that gets left unnoticed.?

Related: More stories from the Investigative Reporting Workshop, American University

The twisted trail to the edge of the fiscal cliff began with the bitter fight over raising the nation?s debt limit in August 2011. After weeks of contentious debate, congressional Republicans and the White House finally signed off on a deal allowing the U.S. to borrow more money. Part of the agreement was the creation of a ?super committee? in Congress that would find ways to trim expected deficits by roughly $1.5 trillion over a decade. If the committee failed to reach an agreement, tax increases and automatic spending reductions ? including deep defense cuts ? would take effect on Jan. 1, 2013. Paralyzed by gridlock, the committee announced its failure later that year, and lawmakers have not brought forward a comprehensive solution to the problem since.

The debt ceiling compromise postponed the next round of the budget debate until after the November election. But it also effectively pulled the pin on a live grenade that might explode, taking the economy with it. Congress can still put the pin back when it convenes a lame-duck session next month, but here is what will happen if lawmakers fail to reach a deal by New Year?s:

???? The so-called ?Bush tax cuts? will expire, raising income taxes on all Americans. Republicans bitterly oppose this and forced President Obama to accept an extension of the lower rates two years ago. The White House recently reiterated that Obama would veto any bill to avoid the fiscal cliff unless it includes tax increases on incomes of more than $250,000. The president continues to support the lower rates for other taxpayers.

???? Payroll taxes, which pay for Social Security, will return to their normal rate of 6.2 percent of income. They have been at 4.2 percent, a measure President Obama and Democrats favored to help lower-income workers weather the recession. The AARP and some Democrats have said they oppose continuing this reduction because it excaberates funding issues for Social Security.

???? Federal spending will be cut $106 billion in 2013, with reductions evenly divided between defense and non-defense funds. According to the non-partisan Center on Budget and Policy Priorities?(PDF), this means approximately a 7.5 percent cut in affected defense programs and approximately an 8.4 percent cut in most affected non-defense discretionary programs. Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney and many others in the GOP have said they oppose the planned reductions in military spending, but they have yet to identify specific ways they would cut the budget.

George Mason University economist Stephen Fuller said there?s consensus on what all this would mean.

?I think there is near unanimity on the impact of the fiscal cliff driving the economy into recession,? he said, adding that the consequences for Virginia would be particularly devastating.

?When a third of the state?s economy depends on federal spending, and about 20 percent on Department of Defense spending, and you nibble at that, it?s a big bite,? he said.

In a report (PDF) published in July, Fuller estimates that the spending cuts alone would cost Virginia 207,571 jobs by next September. His research suggests that California, the world?s ninth largest economy, would be the only state taking a bigger hit. Meanwhile, he already sees signs that economic growth has slowed in the sector of Virginia?s economy that includes federal contractors, historically the state?s primary source of growth.

This is especially worrisome for Northern Virginia, home to 75 percent of the state?s federal contracting jobs. Fuller notes that Fairfax County has the most federal contracting positions of any county in the naton. The Tidewater area of eastern Virginia is home to several large naval bases and other defense installations, making it particularly vulnerable to reductions in military spending.

Perhaps as a result of these realities, Virginia has made itself a national leader in preparing for the fiscal cliff. The state's $30 million Federal Action Contingency Trust (FACT) fund was created to replenish some of the money the state might lose as a result of federal budget cuts. Still, Betsey Daley and her colleague Clyde Cristman, a Virginia Senate fiscal analyst, worry the emergency funds won?t be sufficient.

?Is this enough money to mitigate the impact that we?ll feel? I doubt it,? Cristman said.

The Virginia legislature plans to convene for a short session in January to address the fiscal cliff in whatever form it ultimately takes, but Cristman said policymakers are taking a wait-and-see approach.

?Until there are hard and fast plans as to how this is going to be implemented, it?s hard to do anything other than just speculate,? he said.

Not everyone in Virginia politics is keeping quite as quiet about the issue.

The topic of federal budget cuts surfaced just recently during the final debate in the U.S. Senate campaign between Republican George Allen, the former U.S. senator, and Democrat Tim Kaine, the former governor.

Allen criticized Kaine for supporting the deal to raise the debt limit, arguing Kaine?s actions hurt hundreds of thousands of Virginians by threatening their jobs.

?They should never be used as a political bargaining chip to raise taxes on job-creating small businesses,? Allen said.

Kaine spokeswoman Lily Adams said the former governor backed the imperfect plan along with a bipartisan group of prominent elected officials, including Virginia?s current chief executive, Bob McDonnell, a Republican.

She said Kaine believed the emergency compromise was necessary, because the alternative would have been disastrous for the nation.

??The consequences of default were too great,? Adams said.

The outcome of congressional campaigns like the Allen-Kaine race remains to be seen. In the meantime, several lawmakers on Capitol Hill have quietly begun the process of trying to avoid the fiscal cliff altogether. A Senate??Gang of Eight," which includes Virginia Democrat Mark Warner, has committed to crafting a more palatable deficit reduction deal, even though few observers expect much progress before the election.

?What we lack is a bipartisan consensus on what the solution has got to be,? said Daniel Stohr, the communications director for Aerospace Industries Association, which represents several aerospace and defense manufacturing companies headquartered in Virginia.

Stohr hopes Congress uses the two months after Election Day to rise above partisan polarization, come together in good faith and negotiate a solution. But he also believes lame-duck sessions are typically unproductive. He's pessimistic that this year?s will be any different.

?Quite often, these guys are just making a rude gesture on the way out the door,? he said.

Death comes a hopping and a fluttering ? New Short story zombie ...

Indie cartoonist? R Wiggins(me) has released his first zombie short story ?Death came a hopping and a fluttering.? The story promises to be an interesting delve into the zombie realm with some unusual undead . We follow an everyman slacker named Max, and see the world through his eyes as it quickly turns from suburban New Jersey to a post apocalyptic hell.

This was a labor of love and I think you can see that I?ve wanted to step into the zombie world for quite some time now. It?s an easy read, and for 99 cents it really can?t be beat.

Eid al-Adah or Bakrid in India

Muslims in India join with their brethren around the globe to observe ?the feast of sacrifice? or ?Eid al-Adah? on the 10th day of the month Dhul Hijjah in the Islamic calendar. The festival is observed over a period of three days and Muslims in India abide by the traditions and celebrate Eid al-Adah with pomp and gaiety. Eid al-Adah also coincides with the pilgrimage undertaken by Muslims to Mecca (Haj)

Eid al-Adah is celebrated in remembrance of divine intervention that saved the Prophet Ibrahim?s son from being sacrificed. According to Islamic belief, the Prophet Ibrahim received a revelation from Allah to sacrifice his only son Ismail. With much burden the Prophet proceeds to obey God. However in honor of his faith, God provides a ram for the sacrifice in the place of the Prophet?s son. Since then Muslims have set aside Eid al-Adah as a festival to sacrifice an animal, either a camel, goat, sheep or cow.

In India, Eid al-Adah is commonly referred to as Bakrid (bakri is goat in Hindi) since it is common for goat sacrifices to be offered for the occasion. Depending on a family?s financial status an animal is procured for the sacrifice. There are certain specifications followed while selecting animals and only those without defects and blemishes are chosen to be offered. Economically backward families join in with others and contribute to buy an animal. Those rearing animals offer any one of their farm or domestic animals as a sacrifice.

The animal offered is split into three portions, one for the consumption of the family, the other to be distributed to friends and neighbors and the third portion to be given away to the poor. Through this tradition, Muslims in India ensure that the joy of their celebration extends beyond their home and that all are included.

On Eid al-Adah or Bakrid, Muslims clean up and wear new clothes. The day begins with a prayer session that is often held in an open area, to accommodate all. Following this Eid greetings are exchanged and the festivities commence in full swing. Giving gifts and sweets to family and friends are also important ingredients of the festival. A sumptuous platter is prepared and the feast is shared with all.

Bakrid is a recognized festival in India and is declared a holiday for schools, colleges and other establishments. Some families make use of the day for outings after feasting on traditional delicacies.

On the whole, Bakrid is an interesting celebration that adds its special hue to colorful Indian festivals and celebrations.

Rare Skin Cancers | Treatment of Skin Cancer | Atlanta GA

Atlanta Dermatologists Also Treat Rare Skin Cancers

skin cancer treatment atlantaOne in five Americans will develop skin cancer over the course of a lifetime. Skin cancer is unique as it comes in a variety of types, shapes, and sizes. Most people have probably heard of melanoma, which is considered the most serious and dangerous type of skin cancer that usually appears as a dark black or brown lesion. Other frequently discussed skin cancers include basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma, which are easily treatable.

Dermatology Associates of Atlanta also treats patients with more rare skin cancers that can show different warning signs than the typical sore, lesion, and scaling skin symptoms. ?Rare skin cancers include dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans (DFSP), merkel cell carcinoma, and sebaceous carcinoma. Warning signs may include the appearance of scar or sty, but patients do not always consider these changes as signs of skin cancer. That?s why our board certified dermatologists recommend patients getting an annual skin check to prevent skin cancers from going undiagnosed in the early stages. In addition to a thorough skin check, our dermatologists suggest consulting with them anytime you notice an unusual skin lesion appear.

Our Skin Cancer Center treats skin cancer with several different methods including Mohs surgery: the most technologically advanced treatment that precisely removes cancer one tissue layer at a time. This method of surgery is highly effective, especially for rare cancers that may occur in sensitive areas such as the face, because it lowers the chance of regrowth and disfigurement.? Other skin cancer treatments our board certified dermatologists frequently use include photodynamic therapy, topical chemotherapy, cryosurgery, and laser treatments.
