We already knew that opiate painkillers like OxyContin, Vicodin and hydrocodone are responsible for killing more Americans than cocaine or heroin, and that prescription drug abuse kills more people under the age of 34 every year than car crashes. Now, research shows that prescription opiates also kill more people than skin cancer, alcoholic liver disease and HIV, according to a new study published in the British Medical Journal. The number of deaths associated with opioid analgesics increased tripled between 1999 and 2007, increasing from 4,041 to 14,459, the authors of the study found.

It?s interesting to note how long it takes a trend to be defined as an epidemic. But with these kinds of statistics, it?s pretty hard to ignore the toll prescription drugs are taking on our society.

I almost forgot ? luckily I got interviewed on the phone today about all sorts of things, including about the ways I got into blogging, which reminded me to check the date when I started my own blog and realized it was on this day seven years ago (Ugh!). That is about half a century in dog blog years, I guess. Lots has changed since then ? my blogging topics and style, the blogosphere as a whole, the World? Low-cost device monitors microRNAs

EAST LANSING, Mich. An engineering researcher and a global health expert from Michigan State University are working on bringing a low-cost, hand-held device to nations with limited resources to help physicians detect and diagnose cancer.

Syed Hashsham, a professor of civil and environmental engineering at MSU, is developing the Gene-Z device, which is operated using an iPod Touch or Android-based tablet and performs genetic analysis on microRNAs and other genetic markers. MicroRNAs are single-stranded molecules that regulate genes; changes in certain microRNAs have been linked to cancer and other health-related issues.

He is working with Reza Nassiri, director of MSU's Institute of International Health and an associate dean in the College of Osteopathic Medicine, on the medical capabilities for the device and establishing connections with physicians worldwide.

Cancer is emerging as a leading cause of death in underdeveloped and developing countries where resources for cancer screening are almost non-existent, Nassiri said.

"Until now, little effort has been concentrated on moving cancer detection to global health settings in resource-poor countries," he said. "Early cancer detection in these countries may lead to affordable management of cancers with the aid of new screening and diagnostic technologies that can overcome global health care disparities."

Hashsham demonstrated the potential of the Gene-Z at the National Institutes of Health's first Cancer Detection and Diagnostics Conference. The conference, held recently in Bethesda, Md., was sponsored by the Fogarty International Center and the National Cancer Institute.

"Gene-Z has the capability to screen for established markers of cancer at extremely low costs in the field," Hashsham said. "Because it is a hand-held device operated by a battery and chargeable by solar energy, it is extremely useful in limited-resource settings."

The NIH conference was attended by several U.S. research institutions, including MSU. One of the primary objectives of the meeting was to address the utility of new cancer detection technologies.

Since cancer diagnostics and rapid screening methods currently are not suitable for low-income and resource-limited countries, Nassiri said a concentrated effort should be made to develop more appropriate and cost-effective technologies such as the one developed by Hashsham for widespread global use.

Nassiri said the goal is to continue the partnership between Hashsham and MSU's Institute of International Health to promote his Gene-Z device globally and validate it in the field with clinical care partners across the world.

Working with Hashsham in the development of the Gene-Z device was a team of MSU students, led by Robert Stedtfeld and including Farhan Ahmad, Dieter Tourlousse and Greg Seyrig. The cancer marker approach was led by Maggie Kronlein, a civil and environmental engineering undergraduate researcher.

Low-cost device monitors microRNAs

EAST LANSING, Mich. An engineering researcher and a global health expert from Michigan State University are working on bringing a low-cost, hand-held device to nations with limited resources to help physicians detect and diagnose cancer.

Syed Hashsham, a professor of civil and environmental engineering at MSU, is developing the Gene-Z device, which is operated using an iPod Touch or Android-based tablet and performs genetic analysis on microRNAs and other genetic markers. MicroRNAs are single-stranded molecules that regulate genes; changes in certain microRNAs have been linked to cancer and other health-related issues.

He is working with Reza Nassiri, director of MSU's Institute of International Health and an associate dean in the College of Osteopathic Medicine, on the medical capabilities for the device and establishing connections with physicians worldwide.

Greek bond yields at new record highs (AP)

ATHENS, Greece ? Interest rates on Greek 10-year bonds climbed to new records Thursday amid concerns that demands for collateral in return for rescue loans could undermine the country's latest rescue package.

The bond yield climbed to above 18 percent, with the difference between the interest rates on Greek and German ten-year bonds, known as the spread, stretching to more than 16 percentage points.

Greece has been relying since last year on funds from a euro110 billion ($159 billion) package of bailout loans from other European Union countries and the International Monetary Fund. On July 21, European leaders agreed on a second bailout, worth an additional euro109 billion.

Finland, which saw a nationalist, anti-bailout party win a large share of the votes in national elections earlier this year, struck a deal to secure cash guarantees from Athens in return for its bailout contribution.

The Finnish deal needs to be approved by the other eurozone countries in order to go through, but if it does another four countries ? the Netherlands, Austria, Slovenia and Slovakia ? have said they will seek the same terms, throwing into question the future of the second bailout.

Other eurozone nations, including powerful Germany, which was the main contributor to the first rescue package, oppose the deal as it would be financed through the new bailout loans.

Finland has said it will not back down, although Prime Minister Jyrki Katainen said his government was open to amending details of the agreement.

Under the deal, Greece would put up hundreds of millions of euros as collateral for Finland to ensure the latter doesn't make a loss if Athens finds itself unable to pay back its loans and defaults on its debts. The cash and the interest it would generate would back Finland's contribution in the bailout.

Earlier this week, Austria said it will ask eurozone finance ministers to make sure the same collateral terms apply to all countries shouldering the Greek financial burden.

The government has been struggling to meet the targets laid out in the bailout agreements, and has imposed a series of austerity measures such as increased taxes and cuts to public sector pay and other expenditure. It has also sought to attract foreign investment.

Germany's deputy economy minister, Stefan Kapferer, was in Athens Thursday to discuss investment, meeting with Development Minister Michalis Chryssohoidis.

Talks focused on investment opportunities in Greece ? particularly in the fields of tourism and renewable energy ? ahead of a visit in early October by German Economy Minister Philipp Roesler.

Kapferer was also meeting with Finance Minister Evangelos Venizelos.

Separately, Deputy Development Minister Haris Pamboukis tendered his resignation, following a dispute in a Cabinet meeting over the recently abolished merchant marine ministry.

The development ministry confirmed the deputy minister had handed in his resignation to Prime Minister George Papandreou.

The ministry's role, structure and name has been changed several times in recent years. It was split up in the last Cabinet reshuffle in June, with part coming under the responsibility of the development ministry and part, such as the coast guard, going to the public order ministry.

According to state TV, a dispute broke out during a Cabinet meeting Wednesday, with Pamboukis arguing in favor of the existence of a separate marine ministry, and the public order minister, Christos Papoutsis, arguing against.

Technology and automation has always been about the promise to do more with less with your accounting packages.? And this is certainly the case with the newest offerings based on ?cloud computing?.? Do those promises hold up?? Let?s take a closer look at some of the pros and cons of Software as a Service, Hosted and Cloud Computing.? ?For information on accounting software packages in these categories, go to www.accountingsoftwaresuccess.com.?

First let?s identify a few terms.

Cloud computing is a term coined by the ?cloud? symbol typically used on flow charts to represent activity on the internet.? Data is sent into the cloud, functions are processed, and data is returned to the user or some other constituent.? Applications using cloud computing perform their functions off-site.?

Hosted solutions generally involve the end user purchasing the application software or accounting package, and paying a provider to house (host) the software on a server located at the providers location.? These sites are usually secure data warehouses, protected from natural disasters, and with multiple levels of back-up to insure data security.? The provider charges a periodic fee for their service, while the client pays for the software license and on-gong costs for upgrades and any maintenance and support fees.

Software As A Service, or SaaS models, typically involve the provider owning the software license and the user subscribing to use the application for a period of time.? As in a hosted solution, many of the technical tasks are performed by the provider (back-ups, upgrades, etc.)? The cost to the user in this case includes not only the expense of hosting the application or accounting package, but also a fee to use the application.?

If we look more closely at the benefits of these models, we see that there are both pro?s and con?s.?

Technology Outsourcing - On the benefit side of the ledger, a reduction in both technical infrastructure and internal skills could be recognized.? Since the servers providing the storage and processing are at the provider?s location, on their equipment, internal requirements for these resources are reduced ? at least for these functions.? But therein can be the mitigating factor to recognizing these savings.? If the technical resources are required in-house for other functions that are not outsourced, then these savings are not fully realized.?

Reduce initial investment ? As opposed to purchasing an application outright and housing it on-site, SaaS and hosted solutions provide potential savings in hardware and software outlays.? This can certainly allow access to an otherwise price prohibitive application.? However, many traditional licensed providers offer leasing terms that may also allow a user to spread payments over time.? A thorough financial analysis on ?total cost of ownership? is required.? In addition, factors such as budget / funds availability and preferences in recording the investment may impact the decision.? For example, an organization may have approval to purchase a system outright (or not), or may prefer to pay for their system as a current expense (SaaS) versus a capital expenditure (licensed).

Reduce Payroll / Increase productivity ? Time savings realized through the reduction of the maintenance of the system may translate to either reduction of overall staffing or reallocate of resources to more productive tasks.? Of course this is generally one of the objectives of any system upgrade ? to relieve talented staff of ?task related? activities and allow them to focus on more analytical issues.? In addition, the ability of off-site users (such as accountants and/or auditors) to access the system remotely may reduce the need for full-time, in-house skill sets.?

Scalability / Functionality ? For subscription and hosted services, access is usually based on a per user basis.? And as an organization?s needs change, users can be added or removed.? In a similar fashion, SaaS providers sometimes offer individual subscriptions on a function basis (AR/Billing, payroll, HR, etc.)? Therefore functionality can be added or removed as needed.? On an in-house, licensed model, users and functionality can generally be added.? However, removing users or functions will not result in a refund of the license purchase, although it may reduce on-going maintenance expenses.

Off-Site Access ? Hosted and SaaS applications can generally be accessed from anywhere.? Users can easily log-in to the system from home or other offices.? A user in an out-of-town hotel can log-in and review a client record, run a report, or update expense information.? In addition, any user with a ?need to know? (such as an accountant, auditor, board member, etc.) who may not be located at the office can also access the system.? While this can also be accomplished on an in-house system, it may require additional equipment and configuration.?

Data Integration ? Some SaaS and hosted providers offer multiple functions in fully integrated suites or ERP systems.? This functionality might be beyond the reach of smaller organizations due to financial or technical considerations.? By using a service, you may be able to gain greater breadth of functionality.? In addition, workflow processes may be included in these systems as part of the ?basic? solution, offering electronic review and approval of documents.? Again, this generally available in housed systems as well.?

Data Security ? Hosted and SaaS services of now using portals for access which enhance data security.? In fact, many organizations that house data internally also use portals for external access due to security concerns.? Yet confidence in data security remains one of the largest obstacles to the hosted or SaaS system.? While the industry assures users of the safety of their data, routine media reports of compromised security within data warehouses make many potential users skeptical.? Indeed hosted and SaaS providers are facing ever increasing regulations on data security and encryption requirements.? And compliance to these regulations are something a potential user will want to review.?

Recent studies by the AICPA suggest a 12% adoption rate of cloud-based systems in the next 5 years.? Of course that means a overwhelming 88% of systems will continue to be licensed housed systems.? Yet many experts see this trend as the beginning of what will ultimately become the new standard.? As for end users such as you and I, we will need to use our tried and true due diligence practices and cost/benefit analysis to see which model best suits are particular needs.

Bank of Japan may ease monetary policy again (Reuters)

TOKYO (Reuters) ? The Bank of Japan will consider easing monetary policy further, possibly at an emergency meeting before next month's rate review, if further rises in the yen push down Tokyo stock prices enough to hit business sentiment, sources said.

The government may also intervene unilaterally again in the currency market to weaken the yen, although analysts doubt whether such moves can alter a broad weak dollar trend.

A senior government official expressed Tokyo's readiness to step into the currency market to stem yen rises if necessary, saying that recent moves have been speculative.

"Japan's stance is consistent in that it will take decisive action depending on market developments," the official told Reuters on Sunday.

The central bank loosened policy just two weeks ago to ease the pain of persistent yen strength on the export-reliant economy, and has expressed its readiness to act again if the prospects of a moderate economic recovery come under threat.

After the yen rose to a fresh record high against the dollar last Friday, BOJ officials will scrutinize Asian market moves on Monday and start debating whether the potential harm from recent yen gains warrants further policy action.

The BOJ's next regular rate review is on September 6-7.

But the chance of it easing its already super-loose policy before that cannot be ruled out, depending on market developments, sources familiar with the BOJ's thinking say.

"We will act swiftly, if needed, with an eye on economic conditions," one of the sources said.

Still, a brief yen spike to fresh records alone would not trigger immediate BOJ action.

For the BOJ to call an emergency policy meeting, it would take a sustained yen rise above 76 to the dollar, accompanied by falls in Tokyo stock prices that are sharp enough to hurt business confidence, the sources say.

"The BOJ doesn't target currency rates but deals with the effect of exchange rate moves. The trigger for monetary easing would be a severe deterioration in sentiment," another source said. Both sources spoke on condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the matter.

If the BOJ were to ease policy, the most likely option would be to expand its 50 trillion yen ($656 billion) pool of funds to buy government and private assets and offer cheap fixed-rate funds via market operations. The pool was expanded when the BOJ eased policy earlier this month.

FIRMS FEELING THE PAIN

Tokyo intervened unilaterally in the currency market and eased monetary policy on August 4. But the steps have not stopped investors from seeking the yen as a safe haven against risk, with the dollar hitting a record low of 75.95 yen on Friday. It later bounced back above 76 yen.

Japanese policymakers have continued to issue verbal warnings to markets against pushing the yen up too high, and do not rule out intervening again if they see moves as speculative.

But the effectiveness of any solo intervention would be limited, with very little chance that Japan's G7 partners would agree to jointly step into the market to halt a grinding rise in the yen, analysts say.

Some in the government and the BOJ are cautious about using their depleted policy options now, given a host of events that could easily wipe out the impact of any steps they take.

Among them is Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke's speech on August 26 at Jackson Hole, Wyoming, where he may signal the chance of further monetary stimulus, and U.S. payrolls data on September 2.

The government, however, cannot afford to stand pat, mainly for domestic reasons. The dollar is well below the 80 yen level that many exporters made the basis for their earnings forecasts for the current financial year to next March.

Many Japanese exporters, who over the years have cut costs to offset the damage from yen gains, say current yen rises are beyond what they can take and may shift production overseas.

A strong yen has benefits such as cutting import costs and making overseas M&A cheaper for Japanese firms. But a yen rise now is painful for many manufacturers banking on a swift recovery in the second half of this year, when supply constraints from the March earthquake and tsunami ease.

Toyota Motor Corp (7203.T), Japan's biggest car maker, says every 1 yen rise against the dollar cuts its annual operating profit by 30 billion yen. Honda Motor Co (7267.T), the country's third-biggest auto maker, is studying possible production bases overseas to replace export-bound car production in Japan.

"Protecting Japanese manufacturing and building cars here is becoming more and more difficult," Honda Chief Financial Officer Fumihiko Ike said earlier this month.

The government plans to come up with a package of steps to ease the pain in a third extra budget, such as offering cheap loans to small firms hit by the yen's rise.

But progress may be slow as ruling party lawmakers are maneuvering to select a successor to unpopular Prime Minister Naoto Kan, who is expected to step down as early as the end of this month.

With at least seven ruling party lawmakers -- including Finance Minister Yoshihiko Noda -- eyeing the nation's top job, the outlook for who will take the helm is unclear, as well as how the next leader will address the yen's rise.
