Contrary to what often seems like public opinion (at least to an earphone reviewer), $50 is not a lot to pay for earphones. In fact, it approaches the minimum you can spend and still get some sort of pleasure out of the investment. So the first thing I noticed about the LSTN Bowerys is that, despite being $50 (direct), they look far more expensive. Reclaimed wood is used on the earpieces, and a nylon-lined cable houses an inline remote control and microphone for mobile devices. These are not materials and features typically found on budget earphones, so the next thought is: Are these are going to sound horrible because they spent all the production cost on looks, not performance? The good news for bass lovers is that the earphones actually deliver distortion-free, powerful low-end. The bad news for everyone is that they can often sound muddy.
Design
There's nothing that looks budget or cheap about the Bowerys design. A quality, nylon-wrapped cable descends from earpieces made from reclaimed wood?a striking look that comes in three different wood types (Beach Wood, Cherry Wood, and Ebony Wood?our test unit was the Ebony.) The LSTN logo is tastefully etched into the wood, so that it doesn't really stand out?it's the wood grain you notice more than anything.
An inline remote control and microphone are situated around mouth-level along the left ear's cable. The remote is of the single-button variety, which is better than no remote at all, but it means you can only control playback, track skipping, and answer calls?there's no volume adjusting here. Call clarity through the mic is par for the course in the land of cellular fidelity. Your partner will understand you just fine, and you them, but things don't always sound crystal clear, and this has far more to do with mobile fidelity than it does the mic itself.
Included with the Bowerys: three total pairs of black silicone ear tips, and a canvass draw-string carrying pouch. LSTN also donates a portion of your money to Starkey Hearing Foundation to help those with damaged hearing get hearing aides, so you can feel like you are doing a good deed by purchasing your earphones.
Performance
On tracks with tremendous sub-bass presence, like the Knife's "Silent Shout,"?the Bowerys deliver some deep low-end without any real issues. At absolute maximum volume, the earphones sound and feel as if they're flirting with distortion, but they never quite cross the threshold into real distortion?an impressive feat for a pair in this price range. Many cheaper earphone pairs will avoid distorting on deep bass tracks by avoiding reproducing deep bass frequencies altogether, but the Bowerys deliver a powerful low-frequency punch. Bass lovers will be pleased with the boosting that happens in this range, purists will not.
On Bill Callahan's "Drover," the bass boosting has a bit of a muddying effect on the mix?the drumming receives too much low-end, as do Callahan's baritone vocals. There is some high-mid sculpting that saves the guitar strumming from disappearing in a sea of low frequencies, and the vocals receive enough treble edge to more or less stay in command of the mix, but things are definitely weighted to the bass end of the spectrum in a dramatic way. In this price range, it's rare to find a pair of earphones that can deliver thunderous bass and also handle the nuances of a mix and maintain the balance, so this is not a huge surprise.
The Bowerys deliver Jay-Z and Kanye West's "No Church in the Wild" with power in the lows, but at times things lack clarity. We get the thump of the kick drum loop, albeit with less accompanying high-mid attack than we typically hear on this track. And we get sub-bass synth hits delivered with power, but not a whole lot of definition?it almost sounds as if the synth and the loop are one, whereas a clearer sound signature would define the contour of each sound more precisely. Vocals on this track manage to avoid any sort of muddiness, mainly because no one on this track has a lower-register voice like Callahan's.
Classical tracks, like John Adams' "The Chairman Dances," fare a bit better on the Bowerys in terms of overall balance. Tracks like this often naturally favor the high-mids and brighter instruments, which means they do just fine here without much extra boosting and sculpting in the higher frequencies. The bass boosting adds a subtle low-end richness to lower register strings and percussion?things don't sound too heavily-boosted since much of the low frequency boost focuses on truly deep, near sub-bass frequencies that can exist in an orchestra, but not with the abundance they are found in electronic music or modern pop and hip hop. Thus, the large drum hits at the end sound full and powerful without sounding ridiculously over-the-top, though purists will still find the bass presence here too much.
If it's a more balanced sound you seek in the price range, the NuForce NE-650M is a solid, affordable option. If you like the idea of some bass boosting, but have some more room in your budget, the Sennheiser MM 70s deliver solid low end with balanced highs. And if you're really trying to spend the least amount of money you can without buying garbage, both the RHA MA150 and the id America New Metropolitan offer decent performance for their very-low prices. But at $50, the LSTN Bowerys are a good-looking earphone with phone controls and gobs of bass. If you prefer a sound signature that favors the low-end, the Bowerys are a budget option worth considering.

Solomons, a lawyer before rugby turned professional 18 years ago, is most associated with the 1997-98 period when he was assistant to South Africa coach Nick Mallett. It was during that period that the Springboks put together a run of 17 consecutive victories, matching the major nation record established by New Zealand three decades earlier.
After leaving that role, Solomons was appointed head coach of Western Province and then took over at the Stormers, leading them to the Super 12 final in 1999. In 2001, he was appointed head coach of Ulster, a position he held for three years. The province reached the knockout stages of the Celtic League every year he was in charge and also enjoyed an unbeaten home record in the Heineken Cup.
Solomons was then poached by Northampton, but his time there was brief and unhappy. Appointed at the start of the 2004-05 season, the East Midlands side clocked up eight straight losses under the new coach, who was out of the job by the end of November.
Solomons? other roles in recent years have included stints as a high performance consultant for the International Rugby Board and taking charge of the Barbarians, in which situation he guided the invitation side to wins over England, Scotland, Wales, South Africa and New Zealand.
Edinburgh had a wretched 2012-13 season, in which they were whitewashed in the Heineken Cup and finished third-from-last in the PRO12, but Solomons said he was relishing the challenge ahead.
?This is a very exciting role at a club which has a huge amount of potential,? said the new coach. ?The ambition and desire of everyone involved with the club to do whatever it takes to build its success are very impressive.
?I?m very much looking forward to arriving in Edinburgh, teaming up with Stevie [Scott] and meeting the challenges head on.?

California and Australia have agreed to step up efforts to work together to link their respective carbon markets, just weeks after Australia's prime minister announced he would accelerate plans to replace the country's carbon tax with an emissions trading scheme.
California's Air Resources Board and Australia's Clean Energy Regulator yesterday signed a memorandum of understanding that aims to establish a working relationship for the two organisations to co-operate on efforts to curb greenhouse gas emissions.
The agreement builds on existing work over the last year, which has seen the two organisations share some of the practical experiences gained introducing a new carbon market.
The new framework focuses on measures to increase investment in clean energy generation and improve market integrity, as well deepening collaboration between the two agencies.
For example, it will allow the organisations to share information on designing and running carbon pricing programmes and discuss how they could link their markets in future.
Mary Nichols, chairwoman of CARB, said the agreement would continue California and Australia's "productive relationship" as both jurisdictions seek to expand their carbon markets.
"It is another step forward in California's efforts to establish relationships with other programs to continue sharing information and best practices to fight the global danger of climate change," she said.
The agreement comes just weeks after Prime Minister Kevin Rudd said Australia would replace its carbon tax with an emissions trading scheme (ETS) a year earlier than planned if his Labor party were to win this year's election.
Rudd wants the fixed price on carbon emissions to end on 30 June 2014, rather than 2015, with a floating market linked to the European Union's ETS opening the following day.

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. ? President Barack Obama on Tuesday offered congressional Republicans a new corporate tax cut and jobs spending package he said might "help break through some of the political logjam in Washington," only to have GOP lawmakers immediately throw cold water on the idea.
The announcement and quick rejection underscored how elusive common ground is between the Democratic White House and Republicans in Congress on fiscal issues. The divide was particularly stark on the corporate tax proposal given that both parties generally have supported overhauling the code for businesses, though the White House and Republicans have differed on specifics.
Obama outlined his proposal in a speech at a massive Amazon.com plant in Chattanooga, his latest stop on a summertime campaign to refocus his agenda on the economy. He said "serious people" in both parties should accept his offer.
"I'm willing to work with Republicans on reforming our corporate tax code, as long as we use the money from transitioning to a simpler tax system for a significant investment in creating middle-class jobs," Obama said. "That's the deal."
But the office of House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, complained that Obama's plan was simply a repackaging of proposals the White House has always supported.
"It's the opposite of a concession," said spokesman Brendan Buck, noting that Republicans want to link a corporate tax overhaul with changes in the individual tax code.
In another sign of their sour relationship, Boehner and the White House also dueled over the proposal's rollout, with the speaker's office saying officials there first learned about the plan from media reports. An Obama spokesman said the White House tried to tell Boehner's staff about the plan a day in advance but the call was not returned.
Like Republicans, the president previously has called for corporate tax reform to be coupled with an individual tax overhaul. But his new offer drops that demand and calls only for lowering the corporate rate from 35 percent to 28 percent, with an even lower effective tax rate of 25 percent for manufacturers.
The White House also said the president will continue to seek changes to the individual tax rate as part of a larger "grand bargain" he wants with the GOP. But with the prospects of such a deal growing increasingly slim, Obama advisers say they've opted to isolate an area on taxes where they believe they have more agreement with Republicans.
Obama also wants lawmakers to pour one-time revenue generated from the tax overhaul into jobs programs, including infrastructure, manufacturing and community colleges.
"If we're going to give businesses a better deal, we're going to give workers a better deal too," the president said.

The release of Google?s latest tablet recently sparked renewed interest in the 7 inch tablet market. The Nexus 7 (2013) is an upgrade to last year?s model that now comes with superior hardware specs and surpasses its predecessor in almost all aspects. But how well does this new device stack up against Apple?s iPad Mini? Let?s compare both devices.
Display
The iPad Mini has a larger display (7.9 inches) compared to the Nexus 7 (7.02 inches). Despite having a size advantage it is the Nexus that has the better display with its resolution of 1920?1200 at 323ppi compared to the Mini?s 1024?768 at 163ppi. The Nexus is a great device for playing games and watching HD movies since it has a 16:9 aspect ratio. The Mini on the other hand only has a 4:3 aspect ratio that?s not great for watching HD videos however is perfect for reading ebooks.
Processor
The Nexus 7 uses 1.5Ghz Quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro that should outperform the outdated 1 GHz Dual-core A5 used by the Mini.
Price
In terms of affordability it is the Nexus 7 that is much cheaper. Prices for the Nexus 7 start at $229 for the 16 GB model with the 32 GB priced at $269. The 16 GB iPad Mini starts at $329 with the 32 GB model priced at $429.
Software
What is probably the biggest difference between these two devices is that the Nexus 7 runs on android while the iPad Mini runs on iOS. It?s difficult to compare both systems since it all boils down to which one a person prefers to use. An Android user will immediately chooser the Android OS while an apple user will most likely choose iOS.
Quick Comparison
Nexus 7 (2013)
iPad Mini
If you are looking for a small sized tablet at an affordable price then the latest Nexus 7 device is definitely worth considering since it has better hardware specs.

(Reuters) - Apple Inc said on Sunday it will shift Bob Mansfield, senior vice president of technologies, out of its executive team to work on special projects.
Mansfield, who has led the development of a number of Apple devices including the popular MacBook Air laptop, had at one stage announced his plan to retire last year as head of hardware engineering but stayed on to lead Apple's semiconductor and wireless teams.
Mansfield is the latest addition to Chief Executive Tim Cook's "special projects" team. In July, Cook hired a former chief executive of French luxury group Yves Saint Laurent, Paul Deneve, to work on special projects.
Last October, Cook overhauled his management team, pushing out the powerful head of the company's mobile software products group.

St. Paul Mayor Chris Coleman touched on the thorny issue of drug policy reform Sunday at the Landmark Center after viewing a documentary about the war on drugs.
Coleman participated in a panel discussion along with Sir Richard Branson, the founder of the Virgin Group, who is promoting the documentary "Breaking the Taboo," which chronicles the supposed worldwide failures of the war on drugs.
Since it debuted in December, discussions about the film, which Branson's son, Sam, co-produced, have centered on the debate about whether drugs should be treated as a health problem rather than a criminal problem.
Richard Branson, a member of the Global Commission on Drug Policy, has been critical of the war on drugs. Coleman has been supportive of drug courts and other efforts that often promote rehabilitation over incarceration.
"When the drug courts were started in Hennepin County, there was a lot of controversy about that," Coleman told the audience that nearly filled the Landmark Center's 230-seat auditorium. "But people all of a sudden realized that there was a tremendous benefit. It got people in recovery ... and saved money."
Coleman noted that Minnesota has been at the forefront of recovery and often is referred to as the "land of 10,000 treatment centers."
"We do it as good as anybody," he said. "Addiction is painful, and it is really important that people have resources and places to turn."
Many audience members cheered as Coleman noted how the war on drugs has hit the African-American community especially hard.
"Again, I'm not here to advocate for deregulation of all drugs or anything. I'm just saying that this isn't working, and we're seeing the consequences of that," Coleman said.
Branson is believed to be one of the richest business moguls in Britain, and the Virgin Group -- which includes Virgin Atlantic Airways and Virgin Megastores -- spans more than 400 companies. Branson was in St. Paul to also attend the Starkey Hearing Foundation gala held at RiverCentre.
Treating addiction as a public health problem instead of a crime would reduce the money spent on law enforcement and incarceration, Branson said Sunday.
"The first step is (that) nobody caught with any kind of drug would ever be sent to prison," he said. "If they have a drug problem, they will be helped. That has worked in other countries around the world, and that would be great if that could be introduced here. Ask yourself if you'd want your brother, sister or children sent to prison or helped."
The others panelists Sunday were Sarah Gordon, an HIV counseling coordinator with the Minnesota Department of Health, and Naya Arbiter, vice president of the Amity Foundation, a nonprofit that provides drug treatment services in California, New Mexico and Arizona.
Filmed in eight countries and narrated by Oscar-winning actor Morgan Freeman, "Breaking the Taboo," launched online on Hulu.com last week.
More screenings are planned in more than 20 venues in the U.S., England, Thailand and Australia.

Malaca?ang, however, did not act surprised, saying the Filipino boxing icon has every right to pursue his dream.
"Kung sa damdamin ni Ginoong Pacquiao (ay) karapat-dapat siyang tumakbo, nasa sa kanya po 'yun. We cannot stop anyone from fulfilling their ambition," presidential spokesperson Edwin Lacierda said in an interview with reporters on Monday.
But one major point raised by the Palace official may prove to be a stumbling block to Pacquiao's plan.
"Bawat tao naman basta lumagpas kayo ng 40 years old may karapatan kayong tumakbo bilang pangulo ng Pilipinas," Lacierda said.
Article VII Section 2 of the 1987 Philippine Constitution states "no person may be elected President unless he is a natural-born citizen of the Philippines, a registered voter, able to read and write, at least forty years of age on the day of the election, and a resident of the Philippines for at least ten years immediately preceding such election."
Pacquiao is only 34 years old and will turn 38 in 2016, the year of the next presidential election. ?
On the day of the May 2016 polls, Pacquiao will only be 37. His birthday is on December 17.?? ? Kimberly Jane Tan/KBK, GMA News
