Retina-equipped iPad mini delayed until early 2014, report claims

Blamed on shortages of Retina panels

A second-generation iPad mini with a Retina display has been delayed until early 2014, claims Taiwan's Economic Daily News. Apple was reportedly aiming at a Q4 2013 launch, in time for holiday sales, but encountered a shortage of Retina display panels. EDN suggests that Apple may also be planning to offer both Retina- and non-Retina models, but any other details are unknown.

Reports have so far been inconsistent about when a new Mini might arrive, and whether or not Apple will include Retina capability. A higher resolution has been the greatest demand for a second-gen device, but Apple would need to establish a supply of 7.9-inch Retina panels on top of the 9.7-, 13-, and 15-inch panels it uses for other products. The company would also need to switch to a faster processor, but it could simply use a variant of the A6X found in the fourth-gen 9.7-inch iPad.
